I get bad cramp in my legs when I snow ski. A bit of Potassium Chloride does the trick. Sodium Chloride is table salt, Potassium Chloride is a salt substitute. Other than that, bananas.

For dehydration or overexertion: salts, acids, calcium, potassium, mustard. With blood pressure meds potassium and magnesium and don't take gensing or ginko with many of bp meds (read the paper from the pharmacy)

The reaction of muscle contraction is based on calcium. The response reaction is based on magnesium. As suggested, dehydration is a big contributor... WATER, distilled, best. From there, as suggested, any source of water and salts should help. One of the overall best is "kelp" as in "seaweed." The salt water of the sea in which kelp grows has practically all minerals and should have the 60 absolutely necessary in human nutrition. Dose is by body weight. 3 or more twice a day for runts. 8 or 10 for the big suckers.

Vinegar, acetic acid will probably have salts dissolved in it. Herbal remedy is based on red pepper/cayenne and in vinegar, commercial, one, is Tabasco. (Supposed to be great for heart cramps as in heart attack.) Common in spice preparations.

And, as suggested, soda or any "bubble drink" (includes beer, darn...) usually has phosphoric acid to "hold" the bubbles and this "binds" calcium meaning you need more, a lot more... best avoided... Phosphorous is the red in red meat, present in "white meat" but not as much... Thus better a cheese burger than hamburger... Luck.

Soap is made from fats that have calcium and other minerals in them and can be absorbed thru the skin. Sometimes it is enough and works. Sometimes not. Cheap to try.

Water, yes water plus electrolytes. If cramps are from dehydration plain water will dilute the body's electrolytes further and cause cramps to worsen. Add some salt and/or vinegar.

I drink more water when I'm active.(chain saw, splitter, gardening, etc.) Also take a potassium pill when I feel it necessary. I always heard that vinegar is good for arthuritis, so sip a spoon full when the back hurts. Seems to help. gypsyman

Fresh mixed daily honey, vinegar and water is good for gouth and arthritis. Daily Alfalfa tablets are good for arthritis also. It takes them about six months to begin working but after that when you feel better and quit hurting and forget to take them then and start hurting again it only takes a week or so for them to take effect. Vitamin C helps prevent sore arthritis when doing exercise/work. Don't remember the rates on the Vinegar, honey, water, but I use 1 Tbl honey, 1 Tbl Vinegar in 8-10 oz of water, fresh each morning.

Pickle juice works. Although I can't stand pickles. We used to have to drink it at half time during the football games to keep from cramping up while we were "cooling down". Then the coach would make us drink it after the game as well so everyone wasn't cramped up for monday's practice. . He'd always go hit up the concession stand and grab the leftover juice from the otherwise empty gallon pickle jugs. He'd refrigerate it, and keep 'til the next week.

If I'm not mistaken, they even sell it now in bottles like soda pop.

A fan, not a relative.  I was going to go by "Moon Unit" but then folks would get really confused.   That hangover cure sounds about right, basically Motrin and lots of electrolytes, although I'd probably leave out the vodka.  My favorite hangover cure is red menudo with lots of lime juice.

I learned recently that cholesterol medicine, like Lipitor, can cause muscle cramps at night.  If that's the cause, quit taking the medicine, or cut back on the dosage, because the cramps are telling you that you are doing horrific and irreparable damage to your muscles.  I don't mean to say that Lipitor is the only cause of cramps; there are many benign causes, but if you take Lipitor or any of its cousins, and you're having cramps you didn't have before, it is an emergency. STOP the medicine.

Since I made this post almost a year ago I kinda forgot about it. Don't know what happened but lately I'm not getting cramps like I used too!!
I did read about an instant cure tho. 1 tbs baking soda in a glass of warm water. Mix and drink. Supposed to be fast acting. I tried it awhile back. Was very salty!! Seemed to work tho.

I have used bitters/tonic water (gin and tonic sans gin) for quinine and it works pretty good for knocking out cramps.

My high school coach always warned us not to eat peanuts or any nuts before a football game. I was eating pecans by the hand fulls at night a few weeks back and I was having cramps real bad. I remembered coaches warning and quit the pecans and the cramps ended. I eat my walnuts or pecans or any other nuts in the early part of the day now

I was in Mexico City about 6 years ago at a nice little resturarant.  My associate and I had been doing presentations for 2 days straight and suddenly I got charlie horses in both legs.  The Mexican gal with us told me to take off my shoes and put my feet on the cool tile floors.  The temperature change would help.  Sure enough that worked, and had worked a couple of time since.

I am learning to watch the electrolytes better so the cramps don't hit.

Get out the blender and make a smoothie with a banana, some pickle juice, a spoonful of mustard, a bit of ivory soap and a shot of gin. Chug it down.  The vomiting will make you forget the cramps.   ;)
