old reloading info for 308
« on: December 03, 2008, 03:38:17 PM »
i was wondering if anyone had an old manual with a load for 308 using a 150 gr. bullet and old winchester 630 powder. i acquired a pound of this and it is not listed anymore. it is also about 25 year old powder.

Neither the Sierra Second Edition (1978) nor the Speer #10 (1980) show a load for Winchester 630 powder in a 150gr bullet for the 308.  None of my newer manuals have anything either.

You don't say if this is for a jacketed or cast lead bullet, but if you are shooting lead then Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook Third edition (1980) shows the following for a 151gr cast bullet from mold #311440 using #2 alloy (This is a flattened round nose bullet):

18.5gr start, 1942fps, 30,100 CUP
24.4gr max, 2301fps, 47,300 CUP

Interesting, they do not show a load using 630 for the 151gr cast bullet from mold #311466, a more classic round nose bullet, but many of the other powders are shown with similar loads as the other bullet.  Most have the same or slightly lower start loads, and lower max loads.

Don't know if this helps.

I recall that 630 was billed as a pistol / handgun powder and any loads for 308 would have been reduced loads - and probably cast bullets at that.  If I recall 630 was not considered stable in cold weather - hence discontinued.  I think I used to like it in my 41 magnum.

I wouldn't think it would be a good choice for reduced 308 jacketed loads compared to Unique, 4198, or 4759.

If you load for handguns like 9mm,  38, 357, 41 or 44  mag or even 30 M1 carbine, I'd use the powder there. Use moderate loads and shoot them up in moderate weather. Get hold of a copy of Propellant Profiles from Handloader Magazine and they show some factory recommended loads. NONE for the 308.

My 1978 Winchester Ball Powder Loading Data booklet shows NO 630 loads for 308.
