Electric Socks

Anybody ever use them?  Out here in NE/CO/WY/MT it can get pretty cool while hunting - especially if you are not moving - and wondered if there was anything better than my fleece socks and insulated boots....

If you have used them, how long do the batteries last?

A friend had a pair of these back in the early 80's...they worked well enough indoors but not outside which did him a lot of good

One of the best things that I have personally done is to go to my grocer and request a couple of those styrofoam trays (like the ones that round steaks come on) then place my feet on them tracing the outline.
You then cut them out and place them in the bottoms of your boots. This has worked very well for me even when I had a cheaper pair of boots.

I tried them and found they are not as good as a good silk under sock and then wool or Sealskin over sock. The material of the sock didn't wick sweat away well enough. That was my experience though, could be I just sweat a lot. If you are stand hunting, there are also overboots you can put on that will keep your feet toasty, as long as you don't have to move in a hurry. SportsmansGuide has them.

Last year I bought a pair after the season was over.  Just before this season started I tested them out with brand new batteries and I could barely tell it was warm after 10 minutes or so.  I didn't even bother trying to use them because they didn't live up to what I was hoping for.

Like most others I tried them and didn't have much positive to say about them. Use the money to buy warmer clothes and hats so feet stay warmer.

The idea is a great one, but the ones I bought were just plain worthless.

Funny, I just dug out a pair I've had in my sock drawer for years (many - I'm talking 20 years or so) and never used.  I think I did try them once but don't remember if they worked.  I was going to use them last weekend, but couldn't figure out what battery they took.  I may try again this weekend since it's going down to 55 or 60 degrees  and If I do I'll let you know.

I had an uncle that moved to Cali and laughed at them when they put on sweaters when the temps got in the 70's. Two year later and he was doing it too.

Doubleb, I just saw an ad in the sportsmans guide for heated insoles. Might be worth a try.

Thanks guys, just as I expected - if they were good all of us would be using them and we'd all know about it. 

I agree on the base layer of silk and then wool or fleece socks in insulated boots although I'm going to give the styrofoam inserts a try just for the heck of it.  Errr, that is, when it gets below 55 or 60!  Oh wait, we won't see that temp until spring.

I found a battery and am wearing one right now. test test test...  I can't tell if it's working or not    well, I guess that answers THAT question!
