Robert E. Lee's statement to his students is the one over-riding rule at Confederate Colonel. "We have only one rule here - to act like a gentleman at all times." We will close with Robert E. Lee's Definition of a Gentleman:

I, and most, agree with Lincoln.
I, and most, agree that they committed no crime in secession.
We all agree that they lost the war that would finally accomplish this secession.
The real question you argue is was the Union legal in defending what they considered Soverigh Union/American soil.
That, also was decided by the war and established the unwritten law that the winner of a war writes the law.

The real question you argue is was the Union legal in defending what they considered Soverigh Union/American soil.
That, also was decided by the war and established the unwritten law that the winner of a war writes the law.


In that example the union would have written the law and enacted it retroactively.  This lends proof that they were illegal in their invasion of the south.

The actions of man and human edict never make wrong principle right.

lc I assume by your statements that you are answering WL. Since I no longer read or answer him I wonder if you might be so kind as to tell me what in the world Union legality has anything to do with my thoughts on words to live by? Is he saying that these people didn't say these things or is he just wanting to argue for the sake of doing it?

I don't understand him at all nor do I want to at this point in time.

They did fight a noble fight. They were granted the right to keep slavery if they returned too the Union.
They chose too continue the war.
Wheather right or wrong, illegal or legally, the Union won.
I think the union had as much right as did the Confederacy. If the Confederacy had won, would we be having this conversation?
It happened and it is what it is.
Now, as in the Texas thread, are you advocating we do it all again? you are bound too repeat history if you don't remember it.
Just tell him I agreed with not trying Davis for treason.

Again William you are off on another tangent having zip to do with the thread you are posting to. But by your own admission here in that post "They were granted the right to keep slavery if they returned too the Union. They chose too continue the war." You confess that it was NOT about slavery even tho you continue to try to harp that it was. Had it been they'd have stopped fighting and kept the slaves.

Can we stay on topic to the various threads?

Well, I'll offer up an apology for zipping into oblivion on my last post. 

Stonewall Jackson was a man.  The following quote is my favorite of those posted.  The statement by Lee would be second.
I am assuming that Jackson was Presbyterian as this statement speaks strongly of God's sovereignty in all the actions of mankind.  I believe that we see in this statement a man who was truly at peace with God.  Ga wb,  these are indeed words to live by.

I'll again say that there is no better test of a man's thoughts that that which he says and does.  The following quote firstly gives the personal convictions of the man concerning his stance during the war.  His words were backed up by his actions.

lc I'm struck by the truthfullness of your Thomas Jefferson quote; there ie truly no better way to define liberty!!

I'll give credit to Gary G.  I found that Jefferson quote in a post that he made. 

Isn't it powerful!

I heard a fella call Rush a day or two ago.  He was from Texas and the host of the show was Mark ______________ from Texas.   They were discussing the Pro Hockey player that was suspended for speaking foul of his ex-girlfriend.  This fella that called in yelled that the Pro-Hockey player had the right to say whatever he wanted because of free speech.  The young fella got hammered because he didn't have a leg to stand on.

I remember being taught, in my early elementary years here in KY, this would have been the early 70's, that my rights ended where someone else rights began.   

Jefferson's words there are definitely a message that needs to be heralded far and wide in this world.  Maybe we can start with mainstream media!!

I love the quote from R L Dabney.  Since he was Jackson's chaplain it's almost certain that Jackson was Presbyterian.  This would explain his understanding of his day's being numbered and his life and times being determined by God's will.  From what I've read of Dabney's writings he is a man to be admired.
