background checks and gun registration?
« on: December 04, 2008, 02:13:40 AM »
So, when you buy a firearm there is a criminal background check to make sure that you are not a criminal purchasing a firearm. I sorta agree with this. I do oppose any firearm registration, however. But, i think that, since the background checks go through an electronic system, they ammount to a registration of any firearm sold. Does information get stored somewhere? Say, the FBI can check and see that you bought a rifle last year?

When I was a cop there was lots of stuff that was "SUPPOSED" to be destroyed. It was totally illegal for Hillery
to have FBI files on all the left over Bushites. No one even came close to making her pay for her transgression.

I'm not sure if this is the latest law on the subject, but here is the FBI site regarding background checks and retention of information.

http://foia.fbi.gov/vaf.htm

There are so many new legislative proposals, opinions, editorials, internet experts, paranoids, and psychics, I really don't know the answer.

I don't have a problem with criminal background checks.

When a convicted heroin dealer with a pardon can legally buy a gun and a guy that was protecting his daughter in a bar fight is denied, then there is a major flaw in the "background" check system.

I don't have a problem with background checks, as long as they do not retain the information.  But, you can never trust the government not to lie.  The background check is, in effect, a de facto registration with the federal gov't.

If, and a major if too, they do not retain the data on your purchase, they just might retain the data that you made a purchase - same thing.

And remember, under the commiecrats now in power you can expect more requirements being crammed down your throats.  JMTCW.

If they're smart it will be one little reasonable law one after another for the next 4or 8 years until we don't have a 2nd amendment anymore. If they're dumb they will try to take it away all at once, and blood will flow.

That certainly would seem to be a wrong thing.  But it is not a background check problem - it is a problem with the way statutes are written and applied, and poor judgement to pardon a heroin dealer.  In your example the heroin dealer could not legally buy a gun before he was pardoned.  Shame on those who would pardon heroin dealers.

Yep, I believe bit by bit and very methodically they will proceed.

They are smart.  Very smart.   They even got a lot of smiling gun owners to vote for them.   :(

The heroin dealer was a weird deal. First NICS denied. She brought up the pardon and asked us to call NICS back, so we did. NICS asked to give them a few minutes and they said they would call back. Several minutes later, NICS called and said to "proceed". The operator at NICS even seemed kind of "taken back". This was NOT Texas, but another state. Texas pardons have to be first recommended by the Pardons and Paroles Board. This was a state where it is only an Executive decision.

They are very smart. It will be piece by small piece. Look how many ways they tried to get Amnesty for Illegals passed AFTER it was defeated and that whole thing isn't anywhere dead now.
