HELP!! Vista Installation Problems...
« on: December 04, 2008, 02:52:06 AM »
Well, right now, my computer is just a box.  I was running XP Pro and I wanted to update to Vista.  So, I wiped my hard drive (like I always do when I upgrade) using KillDisk.  When I'm trying to install Vista now, I'm getting the following error message:

"Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation"

I've used the installation disk to re-format the hard drive, I've used DISKPART to CLEANALL, verify the NTFS structure, create a partition, etc.  I can't figure it out.

I'm running a Dell XPS 210 with a Pentium IV Core-Duo 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB 7200 RPM SATA2 HDD, etc.  Anyone know anything else to try?  I just ordered 2 more gigs of RAM to take my system to 4GB.  I'd like to have it running when that comes in so I can install it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for your post.  I too have read that support page and, so far, have been unsuccessful.  I'm going to try to flash my BIOS over the weekend and ensure my hard disk controller drivers are updated.  Hopefully, this will yield some results.  The major thing I'm lacking right now to be able to fix it is TIME!  ;D

I would have stuck with XP. Vista is so unpopular that microsoft is getting rid of it already. Windows7 is going to be out in 2009 with many of the unpopular vista problems removed. Im getting rid of vista at the first shot at windows7

XD9,PM sent.
With the ones I've been building......sometimes it's a PIA to do.
Just backup, and see what steps I've taken. At times,it's the software.
Sometimes,it's the hardware....DVD drives have failed too.
I didn't say in my PM to you XD9,that when you wipe the drive, leave it as-is.
Put in the DVD,and run it.
During installation, you can format and partition the drive. It will do it for you.
When it is done, then the "Product Key" might show up sooner or later.
At that time,enter it.
When done, you should be good to go.
Yes,I have VISTA on the other 'puter.
Sometimes, those 2nd/3rd party HDD programs can do strange things. :o
My best to you.
Leesecw-Windows 7 ? Might check that out.Thanks.

This computer only has one HDD so multiple drives shouldn't be the problem.  I'm installing Vista Ultimate and I get past the product key screen before this happens.  Also, I am letting the installation program do the formatting and partitioning.  However, it still doesn't work when done that way.  That's the only reason that I entered DISKPART to see what I could do.  I hadn't thought of the DVD drive having problems.  I have another one so I guess I could try that.  The DVD has no problems booting up and getting to this point so I doubt that's it but I'm willing to try anything.  I'm thinking it's more of a driver problem with the controllers.  I haven't had time to do any web searching though to get what I need.  It's been crazy busy at church this past two weeks getting ready for our Christmas program.  Hopefully, I'll get some time next week.  I'm relying on the trusty "back-up" computer right now! :)  Thanks for the input.

Good luck.

Not to be a smart a**, but why on Earth would you voluntarily install Vista? Vista is a cross between a virus and modal dialog box, and that's the nicest thing that I can say about it.
