leverevolution 45-70 bullet performance
« on: December 04, 2008, 07:55:36 AM »
With Hornady announcing the release of the leverevolution bullets to reloaders in '09, I wanted to try and find out game performance with this bullet. I've heard from a few locals that it causes too much damage but I can't see the damage being much worse than a remington hollowpoint, I've had some explosive close range impacts with them. I haven't tried the Barnes TSX FB 300gr like I want because I need to shoot up the Barnes originals that I have. So I'm already gearing up for the off season. Opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Vince

I am kinda curious at what a ullet might be? ??? :o ;D Just kiddin, I have not use them on game from the ole gov. model but I was pleased at the way they worked out of the .30-30, They sure expanded but I wouldn't say to much damage about what I would expect really. Boiler room shots don't do much meat damage anyway and thats what I like to take.

And here I was hoping we had a new wildcat, 480 Ruger bullet on a 45-70 case. ::)  I haven't taken any game with LE ammo except with the 35 Rem, Classic side shot behind the leg and the top of the heart and the lungs were destroyed.  2 ribs punched thru on the off side and a BIG chunk of hair laying on the ground beside her.  Mulie doe, didn't move after being hit.  DP

Someone posted a nice report a few weeks ago on a L.E. 4570 vs deer.

I have taken two bucks and two does with the hornady LE 45-70. One of the bucks and  the two does were similar shots  and went as expected. They were all broad side or slightly quartering away and all 3 were within 80 yards. All had caliber size entry holes and half dollar sized exit holes. All three deer fell within 3 paces of where they were shot. The fourth deer, a pretty nice 9 pt, went a little differently. This Buck was slightly quartering away and I clipped the last rib going in and it came out through the opposite leg, causing everything in the body cavity to implode. I hate to use that word but that is exactly what it did, this deer was no pleasure to clean. When the bullet exited, it caused a lot of damage to the offside fore leg and none of that leg was usable. I can't honestly say that the damage was the bullets fault and of course, the deer fell right there, but I did loose a bit of meat. I probably should have waited for the buck to straighten out a bit but like I said, it was a nice buck and I was pretty excited. I too noticed that Hornady announced that they would be selling the bullits as components and that is pretty exciting. I also remember hearing that the powder that they were using to achieve their velocity is not available to the hand loader. Does anyone think that we will be able to get close to there loads?

Mine shattered the backbone behind the shoulder and I couldn't even find the wound 'til I skinned him out.  No mess inside whatsoever.  I used a tad too much holdover, but I have a tendency to do that on deer at a distance, and I need to work on that.  Couple of inches higher and it would have been a clean miss.

Tomorrow morning is .50 Huntsman day.  Heavy snow North of us has brought a lot of deer down here.  It should be a good ML opener.  Got about 5 times the deer here now than a week and a half ago.  Shooting the .45-70 and the Huntsman is very similar.  They both rainbow and both kill when they arrive.

Good hunting and shooting, guys and gals.

Pete

Sorry again about the bad typing, I'm gearing up for my MONTH off from my three jobs to spend it mostly hunting in MISS. I have alot of honey do's and have to make sure the family is good to go while I'm gone, so I made the post as I was running out the door. Thanks for the responses I guess the next question would have to be.. What are your feelings on bullet performance pushing it around 22-2250 fps? I guess I should call Hornady and talk to them. Thanks for the links to the other threads, I must admit I'm real bad at searching for things. I can honestly say I've found nothing that I've searched for. Bullet performance that was described matched what was relayed to me by friends here.

Thanks

Vince
