Help with paint removal!
« on: December 05, 2008, 04:35:47 AM »
I just got an Encore in a trade but the previous owner applied a wonderful coat of Wal Mart Camo over the whole thing.  It is blued and wood and I was wondering if anyone here can recommend a way to strip the paint off without damaging the blued finish, I am sure that there is nothing that will strip paint and leave varnish on the wood but I can redo that.  I just dont want to mess it up more than it is.  Thanks

I have used regular paint stripper on guns before without harming the bluing.
If you can find a stripper for latex paint it might not hurting the varnish on the wood. Hope this helps.use an old toothbrush to get the paint out of the lettering.

I've never had your specific problem but what I would try would be Prolix.  In my experience, it won't harm blueing and I've used it to remove Locktite from Encore barrels before.  Maybe it won't remove paint (though I think it will) but I doubt it will hurt the blueing.

I would try lacquer thinner or spray brake cleaner, both should desolve the paint

Brakeclean  works well. Use the Non-chlorinated type.(I used Napa Brand)  Spray on Give it a few seconds to soak in the paint. Brush with a stiff plastic Brush. then wipe off. Had a 870 a Guy painted that I did this with. It won't work on the wood to well, I wouldn't think But who knows. I Just sanded and refinished with Lyn seed oil.  Be Sure to oil all the metal parts well when done.

Oh man.....Camo paint on an Encore  ??? Just the though could make me ill.

However, I have a 2 year old H&R 22mag sporter that I think I'm gonna paint with flat cammo paint. I use this gun exclusively to hunt fox at night (sometimes day....but that's rare) and I want to get the "shine" off of it. Not a "pricey" gun. Just want to shoot more fox.

Several years ago I bought a Ruger 10/22 1976 model that had been spray bombed with a heavy coat of paint. Used Medical ether and white shop towels to remove paint. Soaked the rag and let it sit for a few minutes then wipeddown the tacky paint then let it sit again. Took to afternoons but it removed the paint and left the wood finish. Didn't hurt the bluing and after maybe ten years wood and metal seem alright ;D. I got ether at drug store after surgery to remove tape from wound and don't remember but I don't think I had a prescription to get it. Remember though this is the same that was used to put people to sleep so use outdoors and Don't get around sparks/flames!!!!
Not sure if the wood finishes are the same between the two companies but it did keep me from refinishing this one.
Good luck a shame they painted it with other options available.

It's not the hunting or the finding it's about the time we spend with friends and the stories about what was.

My GS used Permatex Gasket Remover to strip polyurethane finishes from gunstocks it makes it water soluable and easy to remove,I've used it on a Rem 870 stock with great success.
