45colt ruger cast bullet data
« on: December 05, 2008, 07:29:08 AM »
I'm looking for 250gr./260 hard cast data in the 1200fps range for 45 colt blackhawk loads. I like unique and bluedot, and am open to others. I am not fond of ball powders. I've been all over the net for this one too, and cant find exactly what Im looking for. I don't just "work up loads" as I would probably blow myself up! tested data is the way for me to go. I have a 5.5" bisley. I don't have a chrony anymore so please include velocities. Thanks!

24 grs. of H-110 with a 250 or 260 gr. Hard Cast bullet gives me 1200 fps. I have chronographed this load many times. This data came from John Linebaugh's article "45 Colt: Dissolving the myth; Discovering the potential" My pistol is a 5.5" Ruger Bisley. These loads should NOT be used in Colt SAA or replicas. I hope this helps.

I use 14.0 grains of Hodgdon HS-6 under 250-255 grain hard cast bullets.  I've never cronnied them but I believe they should be around 1,100 fps...so the books say, but you never know, it could be faster or could be slower.  I've been loading this load for about 15 years and have had very nice results....long distance and decent accuracy.

....in continuation of my last posting; In my earlier years I was always after those "hot" loads.  I wanted the fastest and nastiest load I could pump out of my Blackhawks.  After years and years of shooting, I'm quite surprised that they have lasted as long has they have.  I definitley have never taken them to the limit but they're still pushing some good velocities, espeically considering the number of years and number of rounds I've fired through a given revolver.

The point I'm getting at here is that unless you have a specific need for hunting or something of the like, it probably doesn't matter if you make 1200 fps or 1050 or 1100 fps in the long run, especially when you're shooting 250 or more grain bullets...things get knocked over and/and get killed just the same.  Shouldn't accuracy count over anything else?  Why don't you look up some data and start at the 10% reduced load and work up from there?  Check your accuracy on the way and choose the load that hits your target with good groups.

i understand what your saying blackhawker. I did plan on reducing loads and going from there. Accuracy is my #1 concern. (why hunt if you cant make a clean kill?) I wish I still had my chrony to figure out bullet drops, but I guess thats a good excuse to spend a lot of time shooting! Thanks and God bless

I've toyed with getting a chronograph for years.  The curiouslity has almost killed me over the years to be honest.  I guess that buying a new gun or more reloading stuff has won over buying that chronograph though.

Good luck with your loads and maybe give HS-6 a try.  It burns a lot cleaner than Unique, which I originally loaded with many years ago.   I think that the 45 Colt is one of my favorite rounds to shoot.  It's been around forever yet it still can contend with some of the biggest and "baddest" modern handgun ammo out there.  Have fun and enjoy!
