scope for new howa m1500 22-250
« on: December 05, 2008, 07:57:02 AM »
Hello
I have just bought a Howa M1500 22-250 and now need a scope for it.  I was looking at the Nikon Monarch 4-16x50 bdc reticle.  Has anyone every owned this scope?  If not does anyone have any good suggestions on what scope they have on a gun like this one. This gun will mainly be used to hunt coyote.  Any comments would be greatly appricated.

Thanks
Brian

Buy a scope in the price range of the gun you bought and you will have no worries. Now let me define this. A 400 scope for 250 clerance is great a 500 scope for 350 is great a 300 scope for 175 is great no 100 scopes no 200 dollar scopes. In the above price range the world is yours. Myself i like as much magnafication as i can afford. Try to stick to the scope price of the rifle rule. jmo I'm no expert

BB, the Monarch scope you mentioned with the BDC reticle will work great on yotes but if you ever want to shoot smaller critters such as prairie dogs you should consider a mil-dot reticle.  I have a Burris Blackdiamond 6-24X50 with ballistic mil-dot reticle that is top notch, it shows me .204 bullet holes in targets at 100 yds easily and the reticle is superb for shooting smaller targets.  Remember though, the higher the magnification the better optical quality needed to give a decent sight picture which in turn means more money.  Good glass isn't cheap but over the long haul is worth it, but don't buy more than you need.  Just my $.02 worth.

Thanks for the info Luckyducker and troyboy.  I have thought about the mil dot reticle. I will be buying a scope for a bushmaster 223 soon and will probably go with the mil. dot.  I live in West Tennessee so there isn't any prairie dogs here, but I wish there was.  I will check out the Burris, it sounds like a very good scope.

Thanks again
