I picked up a stainless MK-85 at the gun show in good condition for a really good price. If I converted it to 209 priming can I shoot BH209 in it? Anything special I need to know about this gun?

Anyone have a spare breech plug tool?

I've read where BH209 is not recommended in them, or any plunger type muzzleloader. Haven't tried it in mine, got an Extreme and a new Accura for that. Which breech plug are you using, slotted or hex head. I think I have an extra slotted if thats what you need. Let me know if I can help.

I added a new Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32, Weaver rings & bases, and a sling off an NEF Turkey Gun.  Total investment including new scope & mounts is less than $200.00.

Nice looking gun!!

I have a .54 cal MK-85 with the 209 conversion. I shoot 100gr loose 777 and Hornady Great Plains conical bullets.

Keep in mind you should protect your scope from blowback. It will burn the bluing off your scope. I wrap my scope with leather just above the nipple.

I haven't shot it yet, but I don't plan on removing the stock to clean it.  If you did that you'd have to resight it in.

Although not knights, stocks come off my guns for cleaning, no need to re-sight the gun in.  I do take care to make sure all fasteners are of consistant torque from cleaning to cleaning.

Good luck with that, I have had a MK-85 for 20+ years, and I have shot mine. Try giving it a hot soap and water bath to wash out that Black Powder and Pyrodex without removing the barrel from the stock. For someone that has never shot and cleaned a MK-85 before, you sure seem pretty sure how it is done.

Good luck with your Windex cleaning your corrosive powders. Then again, if you never shoot it and just talk about it, anything will work. Yes your stainless will rust.

I've been shooting & building muzzleloaders since 1977.  I've been shooting inlines (blued & stainless) since the early 90s.  No soap and water is needed (ever) with either type.  Tepid water, Windex, or windshield washer fluid works perfectly.  Barrel removal is ok for Hawken breeched type muzzleloaders.  It's dumb with any other type.

I've been doing it my way for many many years.  I can have my guns spotless in 15 minutes.  You can waste your time with old school (supposedly traditional) methods if you like.  I don't have any to waste.

IF you ever shoot that MK-85 with Black Powder or Pyrodex, you will see what I am talking about. The blowback fouling WILL migrate down into the trigger, between the action/barrel and stock. After that happens, its only a matter of a couple days and your stainless will have pits in it. I have seen the results of what happens when the stock is not removed for cleaning, not my rifles, but others.

I am not saying you have to clean with soap and water, your Windex will clean it, but it can't clean what it can't get to. If you think you can clean a MK-85 without removing the stock, you WILL have corrosion between the stock and action, guaranteed. Just running a few Windex patches down the bore isn't going to cut it. Like I said, good luck!

I'd never trust a gun in the woods that had been disassembled and not test fired from a bench after reassembly.  I guess I'll have to sell it.

there is a method for testing early knights  by using the bolt safety as as  stop  so the trigger can release but the striker (or what ever you want to call it) can't contact the nipple.
I used to manage the blackpowder dept of a small (only 12 employees)gun/ hunting supply store. at that time the knights really took off in the early 90's (the beginning of the end of muzzleloader seasons). and i took care of the owners and several others Mk85s, fine rifles.when zeroing and plinking I would  take the stock off and clean the trigger group also. dry with a hair dryer and lube with sweet oil. I did not use the Breech plug grease i used TC bore butter.  the point of this rambling is when target shooting a complete out of stock  cleaning. During hunting season just the barrel . but a full cleaning afterward
