Teflon tape on swivel stud
« on: December 07, 2008, 05:14:43 AM »
A while back, someone asked the best way to tighten up a swivel stud.  I believe it was a synthetic stock.  I just fixed one quickly and easily by wrapping the threads with plumbers teflon tape.  Mine was a wood stock, but it should work just as well on a synthetic.

For a quick fix on loose screws, I just use the tip of a round toothpick, cut/break it to the same length/depth as the hole, put the big end in the bottom of the hole, then install the screw.  ;)

Yeah, I've done that before and tried it first this time, but those studs are blunt and all they would do is mash the toothpick (I used a wooden matchstick) into the bottom of the hole and wouldn't allow the stud to go all the way in.

Round toothpicks work good due the taper and they're much denser and substantial than a match stick.  ;)

A small piece of the tapered end of a Tie-wrap works well in synthetic material.  Like the toothpick put the big end in first.  After it's been in the hole awhile and taken the threads shape a drop of Super Glue makes it a permanent fix.

I tend to just put a little superglue in the whole... One wood stocks that I have refinished if the holes were stripped to start with I notice that that finish and sawdust slurry tends to get in the hole and when you screw it in you have no problem...
