How do I get my scope straight with the bore
« on: December 08, 2008, 04:41:11 AM »
I have looked for my problem and not sure what to call my problem I have not found anything.

So this is my set up.
I bought a 700 Rem that was cheap it has a 2 piece mount that was on it when I got it,Weaver style.
I put a Mueller 8.5x25 on with Burris signature rings with inserts the standard set that came with the
rings but I have a set of offset also but have not used them.
I also have a bipod and shoot off sand bags a lot also.
This gun will clover leaf shots all day plus I only neck size my brass and no matter how I put it back in it
fits fine,so i am sure barrel and action is true and scopemounts must be my problem.

Like I said it clover leafs shots all day @100yds.
Yesterday I set up to shoot 300 yds to test as I noticed my shots at deer was not hiting right.
and It was calm no wind and it was deadnuts on and 1" high @100 just as I set it up.
now @300 it is 7 inches right.now i adjust this, and it is off @100 ajain.
how can I true this up or just start with a one piece base and try it.
thanks for any help.kurt

I sure don't see how anyone could assume that is a scope issue.  ???  ???  ???

That does seem kinda extreme for a cant issue unless you have that scope cocked seriously sideways. How are you shooting at 300 yards? Are you clicking in elevation or holding over or just putting crosshair on target and letting it drop in where it will?

How badly do the crosshairs look cocked to you?

There are lots of ways folks use to make sure their scope is aligned properly and none I've ever tried really worked any better for me than just eyeballing it while holding it making sure I am holding it as level as I can. So far it's never yet caused me a long range windage error unless I could tell the crosshairs were cocked and just chose to ignore it. BTW that really doesn't work out well and is not adviseable. If they are cocked ya really do need to get them straight.

You can put the offset Burris inserts in sideways to adjust the scope to bore.  Did you dial for 300 or were you holding over?  I would check the retical for plumb if you held over and check the tracking on the scope if you dialed.

kurt,
I'm still not sure I understand the problem but would help if you put the scope through the "paces" listed below and posted a pic for us to see:

1)  Sight in on a target at 100, 150 or 200 yards - pic the distance based on how far your gun will hold about a 2 shot 1" group.  The farther the distance the better the test results will help.

2) Swtich to a clean/new target.

3) Put a 2 shot group into center of target.

4) Click scope about 3" down and 3" to right (figure this based on the clicks per inch)

5) Shoot another 2 shot group

6) Double the down clicks in UP - shoot another 2 shot group

7) Go same no. clicks as in 6) LEFT - shoot 2 shot group

8 ) Go same no. clicks as in 6) DOWN - Shoot 2 shot group

9) Last go same clicks as in 4) UP and to RIGHT - shoot 2 shot group

10) post pic of target

I can use a spirit level on the top turret with the gun in a gun-vise, and the cross hairs will look crooked when I shoulder the rifle.  I have to do as Graybeard said.  I look through the rifle at a plum verticle surface.  When the scope and the plum verticle agree, that's my alignment.  I recheck a few times to make sure.  Maybe I cant a rifle when I shoulder it, but I'll be darned if I can agree with the alignment I get in the shop using levels.

Just call me cockeyed.

when I put it on I put a level on the gun and did the same with the scope.
this don't drop much 243 with 58 Vmax @38000 it is set at 1 inch high @100
and drops 3 @300.
I was shooting with the bipod as I do most often and a sand bag in the rear to hold the stock very little movement. and I set and watch to set up so crosshairs are level when shooting.
it is like the scope is mounted sidways.
as I said @100 great @300 like 7 "off to the right
I moved it 10 clicks left this would be aboutor little over 1" at 100 1/8 or 8 clicks to 1 inch.
to get it to hit but then back at 100 it's over an inch to the left.
I really do not think it is the scope it holds zero just fine.like i said it acts as if the scope is sidways
and not straight with the bore.

I will see if you all have any ways to check it etc if not I will drop it on my 270
and see what happens. that shoots just fine or i mean i just have to aim a bit high to be on at 300 it don't go off center and drift way left or right .

Ray if I try your test to jump around the target.not the first buy the 2nd one you list.
do I need good ammo and good clean barrel,I mean I can blast some 70tnt bullets that don'tgroup well cant I.
we are just looking to see if the scope follows the adjustments right.
is this test at 100 yds?

Kurt,

You are correct - It will check the scopes click adjustments.  It will also indicate canting by drawing straight lines through the 4 corner groups both horizon and vertical.

I would start with a clean barrel on the sight-in target - But no, wouldn't clean it in again.  I would use a box of remington coreloks (or other relative inexpensive load that your rifle likes).

No need to shoot a "box" test if you aren't planning on dialing for elevation/windage and it probably won't tell you much without a very accurate rifle/ammo/shooter.  The scope doesn't seem to adjust correctly, 10 - 1/8" clicks should have moved POI 3.75" rather than 7" at 300 yards.  As long as it holds POA once zeroed it won't matter if you aren't twisting the turrets all the time.

Kurt, I just joined the forum yesterday and ran across your issue.
I know where you are coming from, I am having the same issues with a new rifle!
I think alot of readers are not realizing what you're saying, the scope remains at the same exact settings(  10x and no clicks on any adjustments) and the bullet hits 7" to the right.
I sighted it in at 100yrds and can cut bullet holes, at 200yrds. it's app.4" to the right.
I feel the same that the scope must not be in alignment with the bore, the only thing I did different with the sighting in was follow the instruction that came with the leupold rings. ( move the rear windage screws to get close before using the turrets) I have never tried that before and never had this problem! How did you do yours?
I am trying get some answers before re-doing mine!
Thanks in advance!

Well it's been cold snow etc I have not touched it.But I
did check out some things.
#1 105 speer bullets shoot straight 100 yds-300yds
#2 87 hornady bullets shoot straight 100yds-300yds
#3 58 hornady vmax shoot straight at 100yds 7"right at 300yds
I think it is more of a bullet in flight problem for the 58vmax
these are shot out of a 1/9½ twist barrel may be too much spin
maken them drift so bad not sure.

That information is interesting, I own a 700 in .243 and it is the most accurate gun to date for me! 80gr. & 100gr. both shoot to the same point of impact at 100yds.
I have shot the 80s to 300yrds. on paper they are straight fliers. I have shot the 58gr. v-max alot at coyotes and crows etc. out to 250yrds. with a rare miss, only on crows. Now I am curious and need to quit delaying the paper test for that one!
The gun which I am having the problem you are having is a 700 in 25-06, shooting 100gr.
Remington core lokt.  I planned on upping  to 115gr.  silvertips in reloads as soon as I get the dies and such. If the 115s shoot good I will post it, or any other thing I find to cure the problem.
Thanks for the followup news!

So then you definitely are not the same Wingman who has been coming to the OK PD shoots with us? I wondered when I saw your registration if it were him and he had a problem with his account. Now I know.
