Youth .22 suggestions
« on: December 08, 2008, 07:29:44 AM »
I have a 7 year old boy that I'd like to get a .22 rifle for.  I'm hoping I can find a single shot or bolt gun that has pretty small dimensions but can also be fitted with an aperture sight.  Any suggestions?

These seem like nice starter rifles for a youngster:

Wow that cub looks nice.  Head and shoulders above those thrown together crickets.

The Savage cub is a nice little rifle. It has aperture sights from the factory. I bought one for my Grandson a couple days ago. His birthday is tomorrow!

When my son was 5-6 I bought him an Anschutz Woodchucker.   What an awesome little bolt rifle... 5 shot clip, great open sights but also scope ready, adjustable trigger and a beautiful high grade wood stock.   Would shoot as good or better than even my custom rimfires.   Unfortunately they were only made in the mid 80's (when my son was 5-6), but if you could find one you'd be giving your son a heirloom he'll cherish all his life like my son does his, and pass on to his son.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

You may want to consider a bolt action MAGAZINE FEED, I believe a tube feed is more difficult to load for a youngster ie you could look down at the muzzle or bury the muzzle in the ground.

You can cut down the stock to fit now and later add recoil pads as he/she grows. Also a bolt magazine is more positive to clear and one round can be chambered directly or one in the magazine

I also believe all beginners should begin with open sights

just some thoughts

got my oldest daughter a thrown together cricket, and i was really surprised at how well she shot it.  she kills prairie dogs with it on a small dry lakebed we have permission to hunt.  it's not a big enough property for the centerfire varmint calibers, but .22 lr does just fine.  it has a cheapo  peep sight and cheapo synthetic stock, but she loves it.  it's also light and single shot, so it's easier to control.  the farthest shot on this place is 80 yards.

Another vote for the CZ.
two cool things about it are:
It will take a standard 5 or 10 round mag
and
you can stick it in a full size stock when the kid grows up.
