The people who have the U.S. trillions of dollars in debt now want to supervise the auto makers who are just broke does this sound like a great idea or what?

The auto manufacturers need some help but not from the government idiots.
It is government and union BS that has driven the cost of automobiles beyond the reach of the average working man.
Auto manufacturers need to run the dang unions off tell the government to get heck out of their business quit paying unskilled labor such high wages and start building better more economical vehicles for less. They build so many different models of junk now it's nuts. Does GM need to build a Buick, Pontiac,Chevy when they are just the same rebadged POS? Does Ford need rebadged  Mercurys and Linclons? Chrysler they have so many models of junk it is beyond words. The government and unions may have dug the hole they are in but these greedy idiots that make up the Big 3 were more than willing to jump in with both feet and continue the digging. Let them crawl out on their own or bury them selves when it all caves in. They wont leave a vacuum someone will fill the void before they even get cold.

Car sales are down period. I can't see how the bail out will solve anything. These car businesses are failing for what ever reason. If they get bailed out it will only prolong their going under. You can not survive in a business if you can't sell your product simple as that. Dale

The real problem with the economy is that it is like a ladder with rotten rungs and congress is fixing all the top rungs and wondering why the ladder does not work. The people at the bottom just dont have any money to spend buying anything so they really dont need loans so when loans are avaliable no one will want one they are having trouble paying back the ones they have now. Congress is full of idiots and the people are too stupid to get rid of them.

Its plain and simple...just too many cars being produced. Supply and demand. The market is over flooded, just as with electronics. appliances and furniture.

Hey, this looks like a great opportunity for the Chinese.  They could and probably should buy out all the American auto manufacturers and roll right on along.  I'm not about to buy an F-150, but you could probably pick one up at a Walmart for $2500.

The automobile industry is exactly where the the envirolist was working to get them!!!  If you think back they have blamed everything on the auto that has happened in this country, it was a SUV that was going across the bridge in Mn. that fell into the river and they were sure to show it in the news, If we dont start drilling and REFINING the oil until we can come up with a auturnitive to oil we can expect this global country to colapse even more, we wont need the 2,5 million jobs Osama plans on having building roads and bridges, those roads will go nowhere, those of you who in the past have suported the TREE HUGGERS and their save the earth campaign will have no one to blame, I can figure out where they think leaving the oil under our country is doing anything, their is only so much oil and we better get whats our b-4 some of the 3rd. world country decides to sit out in international water and drill away.    And it is already happening just off the Miami coast in CUBA.   Jim

Government control is a bad idea and will be the end of the american car.

But, but, but--the environmentalists are saving us from "global warming."  And apparently it's working, since the global average temperature hasn't risen since 1995 (according to real weather scientists).

The one thing that I believe is so wrong though is that the elitist environazis aren't forced to lead by example.  They should only be allowed to drive peddle cars, live in caves and heat with solar power.  No flying around in private jets, no mansions on the coast and no exhaling for the knowitalls.

Oh, oh, I fear I'm guilty of thread-drift.

There is only so many people that buy cars/trucks every year. Now you have so many foreign company's competeing with the domestic market, the slice of the pie got smaller for everyone. Cigarette company's did the same thing 25-30 years ago. Only 3 major company's, but every one of them brought out different name brands. Didn't sell more smoke's, other than the new younger people picking up the habit. Just more brands. Made it harder on the retailer, as instead of 8-10 brands, had to carry 40-50, but less quantity of each one. The auto makers were stealing from their future sales in the last 6-8 years, by leasing. Instead of saving up and buying, people leased. It's stupid, at this present time, to buy a new vehicle. Just look around at all the little dealerships selling used vehicle's, that have little or no mileage to speak of. Brand new truck sells for $30,000-$45,000, and there are so many that are 2-4 years old, selling for half or less. Gov't is going to make matters worse. Now their talking about a car czar. Gimme a break. Their doing anything they can to try and patch the damm, but it's starting to break. Better have your life preserver on!! gypsyman

Having just bought a 2008 F-150, i guess i am part of the problem (could
have bought GM or Dodge). My question as always been, What do the union
workers at GM plants drive, What do the union workers at Ford plants drive,
and Chrysler. go by and count the foreign made autos in the plant parking lots.
We want more money and better benefits, but we will drive the competitions
auto.
We did not collapse after WWI or WWII or Korea or Vietnam, don't think
war is the problem, seems we have always thrived on war time jobs.
just my $.02
