Dumb question about 45-70 reloading
« on: December 09, 2008, 02:44:36 AM »
I just ordered a Buffalo Classic in 45-70 and want to start working up a load for it.  I have Winchester 45-70 brass and have ordered some 405 grain lead bullets, but cannot find any definite information on the primer to use.  I would assume it is a large rifle primer, but I hate to make assumptions about reloading.

Any other suggestions about a black powder load to start with would be appreciated.

Thanks !!

yes they use large rifle primers. I just use Winchester for all my reloading as they are readily availbale near home. As for black powder loads, I cant help you there, but if i remeber right, there might be some info in the FAQ section under 45-70 loads. I have a Lyman manual and a LoadBook for mine. Both have sections on black powder loads.

A very limited info from Lyman Black Powder Handbook:  Typical 45-70 load using a 405 gr Cast bullet with 70 grains( volume) Pyrodex RS gave 1250 fps from a 26" barrel.

caveat: If you are new to hand loading  let someone explain the difference between weight by scale and weight by volume to you. IT IS IMPORTANT !!!

As I under stand it, you should have NO air space between the powder and base of the bullet. A wad or some type of filler is required if black powder does not fill all the space in the case!

You need to use a wad cut from tablet back or buy some veggie fiber wads.  The black powder should be compressed slightly, maybe 1/16" via powder compression die.  Then place the bullet over all this seated against the wad. Neck tensionor not is a much argued  point, you decide. Don't use your bullet to compress the powder as it will deform your soft lead bullet and cause accuracy issues. Do use a bpcr lube like shaver, dgl, spg. Loading black powder cartridge for accuracy can be a learning experience and great fun. Played the bpcr silhouette game for several years before selling out.  Crazy accuracy out to 500 meters if you do everything right.    Have fun.  SN
