I know this isn't a rifle or shotgun, but it sure is an inline, and I can't find another board that may be able to answer my question.

I have a .54 TC Scout pistol that I have only used FF and mainly patched round ball to date.  I have been invited to go on a whitetail hunt, and for many reasons this pistol seems to be the best way to go.  What is the best combination of powder and bullet to get the most from this gun?  I haven't kept up on the substitute powders or the bullets available, so I need a starting point.

I would be surprised if you can get enough performance out of the short barrel pistol with any of the powders that will work with it. I personally would not consider hunting deer with a muzzleloading pistol unless you are sure you can get within 50 yards or less as the barrel length is just too short to allow much powder to burn. I have a .50 pistol that I have only shot a few times and was less than impressed with the power.

Keith, I shot 1 pretty good buck with my .50 Scout pistol back in the '90's before Virginia changed the wording of the law.  It put the smack-down right on him....DRT!!...granted, he was right under my stand.  I was shootin' a 350gr Maxi-hunter over 90 gr. of Pyrodex FF.  With the .54 I would be tempted to use a round ball over 90-100 gr.  As I'm sure you already know,  that thing is a handful with that kind of load.  I compare it to shootin' my 45-70 contender.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  :)

Thanks for the input.  From the stand I will be using I will never get a shot even 50 yards.  It will be more like bow hunting ranges.

I never got much over 50 grains of FF as far as I recall and it was a handful.  Maybe I should work up a maximum round ball load and call it good.  I was expecting recommendation of one of the conicals and one of the exotic replica powders.  Patched round ball and Pyrodex I am familar with.

Keith, The conicals in a .54 get to be a big chunk of lead.  Long ago I had a .54 Renegade that I started out shootin conicals, ouch!  Somebody got me onto shooting round balls over about 70gr Pyrodex.  Turned that rifle into a deer killn' machine that shot like a pussycat.  I don't know how the accuracy would be in the Scout.  I always wanted a .45 barrel for mine to try the 285gr .45 Maxi-Hunter.  Never could find one.  I know I tried round balls in my .50 but memory fails on the results....sorry.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  :)
