TC 50cal. Grey Hawk

Does anyone know about these rifles? When were they discontinued, how much they sold for? I have a chance to buy a stainless one with composite stock + accessories but I've never seen one. Thanks for the info.

It is the only muzzle loader my best friend Billy Doss (now deceased) ever used to any extent. I really liked that little rifle of his and would not mind having one of my own but sure not his as he abused it horribly and it took it to my amazement.

I don't think he ever properly cleaned it no matter how much he shot it. He used a bronze bore brush on a rod to push down the barrel when it got so he couldn't load it but I don't think ever used any kinda solvent in that barrel unless it was his ever present can of WD-40. I know he went thru several bronse brushes as the BP sure tended to eat them up after awhile.

Later he gave up on BP and began using 2400 to power it. He asked my opinion on this and I tried my best to dissuade him but his mind was made up so I worked with him to develop a load that was usable and didn't blow him or his gun up. Since 2400 is a very forgiving power with light loads we started low and worked up. I can't recall his final load and wouldn't want to repeat it here even if I did. but he fired many hundreds of them thru that rifle and it kept on keeping on thru it all.

They are tough little rifles and it would be a nice one to own. The Tree Hawk was I believe also SS but covered with camo if I recall correctly.

I do not know when they quit making them but a friend of mine has one and he loves it. He said he bought it new around 8 years ago. I saw one in a pawn and gun shop around a month ago and it was like new and I could have picked it up for 160.00 out the door. Was stainless with a black composit stock. I wish I had picked it up but may still do so if it is still there when I get back to that part of the state. It was well made and had a nice finish.

These are stainless steel versions of the New Englander.  These are great little rifles so long as you use Black Powder.  You can still buy New Englander barrels from T/C (at least last time I looked), but only in blue.  They are non magnum rifles and have a 1:48 twist barrel.  They do well with either round balls or conicals.  Hornady makes a Great Plains Hollow Point that just begs to be used on deer- very soft lead, big hollow point and ACCURATE.

i have one in 50 cal. has a round 24" bbl. shoots well. mine is 1993 model. don't quote me on this but 1998 i think was their last year being made. there wasn't too many of them produced. i really like mine

I found my grey hawk  in Waldron Ark. killed first whitetail with it very smooth shooter and great  looking gun, but my problem with it and my other bp rifles I load to max. and hardly ever get a blood trail at  point of impact. So I am also looking for an idea here.

Use the Buffalo Bullets, Hornady Great Plains or the Heavier conicals of the sort. You should easily get full pass thrus with them and a good blood trail.

Graybeard,I killed 2 whitetails yesterday about a hour apart and both shots were pass thru but no blood til bout 20 yds from where they finally died,these were killed from my omega in-line,I was shooting 777 magnum with a 245gr power-belt, and now I am going to start using my grey hawk I recently purchased , I am shooting it with 100gr. of 777 powder and a 245 power belt I do have a old box of 385 grain Buffalo bullets but the lube is dried up on them , can I clean it off and still use them,in the grey hawk? I dont know much about conicals so what do you think I should do?

i have a gray hawk i bought for my son. it will shoot round balls great with 70 grains  of black powder. but it really shines with a Maxie ball lubed with Crisco good to 100 yards are little better. i have Even worked up a load for a paper patch bullet for it. great little rifle got it in 1994

I have had poor results with Maxiballs.  They are accurate but seem to pass right on through deer without expanding.

I agree with the advice to use Hornady Great Plains Hollow Points.  They are soft lead, with a thick hollow skirt, and have been very accurate in my rifles. Best of all, they are cheap.

That is fairly common with old Buffalo Bullets and Hornady GP both. The guy who runs BB claims the Hornady GP is a copy of his design but as far as I know he hasn't taken any legal action. They are almost identical for sure.

What I've done is just wipe them off and then use any appropriate BP type lube to put on them and load. Probably SPG is the best but most any that is compatible with BP will work. I've done it with them in the past and am sure will again in the future. In all the muzzler loaders I've owned they've been quite accurate with 90 to 100 grains of Pyrodex which is all I've ever used. The BB and GP both expand and penetrate both. They are wicked killers of deer.

Gray beard  can you put conical directly on top of powder charge ? I have always used sabots in my in-line so I know nothing about loading conicals but I am wanting to use conicals in my grey hawk. Help.....
