300WM, but the H&H is great. In fact I like all of the 300's. I like the WM because of fact. ammo avail, although I shoot reloads, brass avail, recoil is not bad at all, ample power, flat traj & the great bullet selection all 30's have. I can take anything on the Continent with it & most animals in the World.

300 H&H is my favorite with 180 grain Noslers no doubt the 300 WM is a fine rifle and outshine the old H&H in the heavier bullet weights. However, I have no problems with the H&H and have taken all things I have shot.

Mine is the 300 Win Mag I also have a 300 RUM. I just love the 300's. I shoot the 180gr bullet out of my 300 Win Mag and out of the RUM I shoot the 180gr bullet and the 200gr bullet. Those are the bullets I use mostly.

I have a 300WSM and a 7rem Mag.  Rarely take a mag out of the closet unless I go out west.

300 H&H,

I have an original pre 64 M70 in 300 H&H.  I shoot it some at the range but its heavy for most hunting as I have other rifles.

i shoot a pre-64 winchester 300 h & h magnum. i use 160 nosler partition bullets with 63.5 grains of 4831. this gets 2900+ fps velocity. it is a great long range gun. the gun  really has moderate recoil, more of a firm push rather than a sharp kick. really nice to shoot.

robertcat,

You may mean the 180 gr bullet?

Which 4831?  Imr, Hogdon, Hogdon SC or surplus 4831?

I own a 300 Weatherby and WSM. I usually hunt with the WSM, it is powerful enough for anything that I encounter, long-range capabilty and sub MOA with my handloads. the Weatherby is great with heavy bullets, but I cannot afford to shoot it enough!

:)H & H, Like most  guys who responded to the question, I love the .300's. At present have 2 .300 Win. Mags, and a Wea. All on  700 actions with custom barrels. One of the Win.s was my second custom rifle, now on it 's 3rd barrel, it is my favorite game rifle. I load 165 Serria HPBT for light game and 200 grain Noslers for heavy game. My other Win. is a 700 with a 28.5 in Douglas barrel I use for long range and windy day coyote hunting. It also gets some play hunting deer/elk in country where long shots are often encountered. I have used my Wea. some. On a maybe 4 or 5 whitetails, a mulie, and last fall an elk. As for the H & H I haven't shot any game with them, but have had 2 721's, and old model 70, and a Ruger #1, but have let them all slip though my fingers. :-[I was just thinking to day I should look for another 721 :-* Fooled with a couple Ultra's, but let one of my exstudents talk me out of both. I suppose for the years I have left to chase coyotes and big game, I will use these. Also have a couple 7 mags, but really much prefer the .300's ;)

A M70 - I use the Hornady and Nosler 165's for hunting and the 208 gr. Amax for long range accurate shooting. I use WM or Weatherby for large game hunting with 180's rather than the 300 H&H. I have shot it with 110 Vmax's and 125 REM's for fun but it is a waste of powder IMO so I quit and just carry a few loaded in case I run into a varmit while hunting. I have the sister 375 H&H and they look goor together - the barrel diameter of 375 is same diameter as my old M70 22-250 Varmit rifle. I think the classic design of the case is very attractive and exudes grace and power if a cartridge can. Buy cases when you see them as they go in and out of supply fairly quickly.

I really like the .30's also. I have an '06, a .300WM and a .300 Weatherby Mag....love all three. It's really hard to choose a favorite.
My /06 is a Win. M70 Featherweight classic stainless with McMillian stock, Leupold 2.5 X 8 VariX III. This rifle gets the most use. It shoots 165gr and 180gr bullets about equally well.

My .300 Weatherby Mag is also a Winchester M70, a stainless classic. This one has an HS Percision stock and a Leupold VariX III 4.5 X 14. A great hunting rifle.

The .300 Win Mag is a TC Pro Hunter that I haven't shot much yet. So far it seems to love the Hornady factory 180gr. SST round. A light, handy rifle. Recoil is heavier than the M70s.

I guess if I had to choose it would be the /06.

Well I'd have to say the .300 H&H as well as it is my only .308 caliber magnum rifle I own. ;D  I haven't shot it yet, but it is an old 1917 rifle reamed out to .300 H&H.  The deal was too good to pass up, so the rifle went home with me.

taylorce1, Just the othere day, I was talking with some of the guys at coffee. We got on to the .300 H & H, one of our old time characters in the valley had one on an Enfield. He was a deadly shot with it. Many stories were passed around of his exploits with it. Unfortunately, he has gone to that elk mt. in the sky. Hope you enjoy yours. It is one of the nicest calibers around. It will do all the old o6 will and lots more. 8) :D ;) :)

;) Since we have lots of .300 shooters at this thread, how do you guys fine the .300WSM????? I am getting the urge for a new rifle and a .300 WSM caught my eye in Casper the other day. Will head that way turkey hunting, in a few days thought I might pick it up. 8) From what I see and read, 180's or less seem to be the way to go. What powder is a favorite?????? I probably would start with I4350 since I have a bunch of it with Re22 next.  8) ;) :)

Regarding the WSM, I love the cartridge. I handload 165 gr Nosler Accubonds. My rifle likes IMR 4831, though there are others that work as well.  I have found that I dont need 180's or over for the hunting that I do, but If your game includes elk and such, they may the the way to go.

I much prefer the WSM's to the old magnums.  The old magnums with belts are more difficult to handload and their actions are longer and most important their rifles are heavier.

The Kimber 8400 stands out with its very light weight short action.   Thats what I carry these days.   The old 300 HH is ok for a short walk from the car but the WSM's are better guns for me.

To each his own. I just don't have any issues loading the belted mags, but I don't try to space on the belt, but the shoulder as in other rounds. Concerning the 300WSM, I like the round, but the 300WM still outruns it & the heavier the bullet, the more the the 300WM pulls away. I use a Sendero & have no weight concerns at least yet, but if you need to carry as light rifle, it could be an issue. When I want WSM speed, I use my 30-06AI with the bullet seated  out. The 22" tube with a long action is still 1"-1 1/2" shorter than a WSM with a 24" & is within 75fps with '06 brass, so I can't find a niche for the WSM for me personally.

:) Thanks for the imput. I will have to think this one over. For me very light rifles are not my cup of tea., I have looked at a Kimber in .300 Win. While it was pretty, the thin whip of a barrel, didn't do much for me. But the replys were interesting. Thanks. ;)

I have a variety of the 30 caliber mags including a M70 H&H and favor 165's and Hodgdon for all around use. The quality of modern bullets have negated the need for 180's plus for large game IMO.

The 300 H&H that I have will not headspace on the shoulder.  The shoulder angle of 8 degrees is inadequate to hold back the case.   I sized other belted cases with adequate shoulders to headspace on the shoulder.

I have a .300 Winchester not the WSM.  In a Wimchester 70 Classic Sporter stainless.  It's going on a bull elk hunt.  I 've used smaller calibers for elk.  I have more confidence on the .300 Winchester.

:D Bear, the  Win. 300 has been my favorite elk gun for years. It has killed a pile. It sure will get the job done in short order and most reasonable ranges. ::)

:D This morn. while out doing some chores, I stopped and shot a few prairie dogs, and got to thinking about my collection of rifles. Some see little use, but are favorites. I have an old 7mm mag. about 3/4's shot out. It is on a custom stock with beautiful piece of wood. While not the classic design, the roll over check piece makes shooting this rifle an easy chore. I decided to move it up into something I never used, so I ordered a .30 cal. premium grade Douglas barrel in #5 wt/ to finish at least 26 inches long. I decided to have it chambered for the old .300 H & H. Have owned a couple, but never one that I really liked. This will be it if it is a shooter. The barrel is supposed to be shipped  next week, and my gunsmith will order the reamer. :D ;)

Older post but what tha heck.

At present I do not have anything in a .308 magnum on hand. This said I have had a lot of experience with the standard .300 Win mag. In years past i would have said it over others simply due to the versatility of loads.

Nowdays, I have two belted mag, one a standard 7mm Rem, and the other a STW, both based on the Sendero. If I were going to pick a 30cal mag to replace either, I would simply rebarrel one of them to the 300 RUM and be done with it.

With the powders and bullets available, it can go from '06 levels to howitzer levels, and is more than capable of anything I would ever take to the field after. In shooting my friends, I have become fond of hitting long range shots repeatably, and with plenty of authority. With any one of my '06's I am good with up to 165gr loads and where they leave off the RUM takes hold and runs away with it.

I'd like to have a 700 Classic in 300 H&H.

The old 300 H&H has a small but devoted following. Its great advantage is that its tapered case body results in  smooth flawless feeding of rounds into the chamber.

As I understand it gives about 3,000 fps with a 180 grain bullet.  A good reliable and very versatile  load.  Shoots as flat as a .270/130 but hits much harder.  A 200 grain Nosler Partition at 2850 is a great load.

How difficult is it to get ammo and brass?
