4X slug scopes
« on: December 09, 2008, 02:06:00 PM »
I put a cheap "Truglo" 4X compact slug scope on the Kids Rossi slug gun, kinda like it.

I Hunt mostley woods, Most shots are 20-60 yards, a few out to 100 or so, but a few spots I could set up for 100-125 yard shots.

I am not looking for "sub MOA" grouping, just deer killing, should the 4X be enough for 125 yards (I have taken deer at 90-100 with open sights/slug gun in my younger days).

What is a decent 4X COMPACT - Bushnell makes 2 series, Truglo, etc.

Tyanks,

I'm partial to the Weaver 4x32, great Japan made scope for about $100,  4x is plenty!

Tim,
One thing the cheap Trueglo 4X does NOT have, is a way to "focus" it.
My eyes are kinda "crappy" and the Reticale and picture are slightly out of focus.

I am not a "scope person" I have a few red dots on My other guns.

Do most scopes allow You to "focus" the scope to Your eyes ??

Thanks,

Nick

You should be able to focus the reticle so it's clear and crisp with the focus ring or ocular bell, that's the first step in adjusting a scope, an adjustable objective doesn't focus a scope, it adjusts it to eliminate parallax error, that's why the term PA or Parallax Adjustable is referred to by some scope manufacturers.  But if the target isn't in focus at ranges beyond 20-30yds or so, it may be a conflict between your eyes and the optics. When I'm at the range shooting all day, there comes a time when some of my scopes just aren't as clear as they were when the day was young, one of them is my Weaver K15, it's a good scope, but when my eyes get tired, it's real hard to get a good view with it, it's just my old eyes. :-\ There was a discussion in the Optics forum once about this, it's probably one of the reasons why some scopes don't work well for some people, where others love them, we just don't all have the same eyes, and it get's worse as we age.

Tim,
I have a plastic lens in My right (shooting) eye, it is set for distance, no amount of straining is going to change the focus in that eye.
OK, I understand you can "focus" the reticle in, but do any scopes allow you to focus the "whole picture" ?
MY Bino's allow me to focus them to my "eye"

Thanks,

Nick
