Heads Up On Green Mountain Barrel Problem
« on: December 09, 2008, 07:06:23 PM »
Hey guys.  I saw a post in the Percussion Rifles section of The Muzzleloading Forum by a guy who bought a GM .54, 1"x32, 1:70 replacement barrel for his Renegade from the Log Cabin Shop, Lodi, OH.  During cleanup following his first range session he discovered the nipple was M6X75 thread, and the breech plug was threaded for the standard TC 1/4 X 28 nipple.

I just got finished checking the .54 GM barrel I bought last month from Track Of The Wolf, AND FOUND THE SAME THING.   The nipple starts to wobble in the threads after the first 1/4 turn out.  Not a good thing.  I just finished sending a notice to TOW and GM.

GM has had a recal on these barrels for about a year now.  If you go their web site they list the SN's and give information to send the barrels back.

Yeah, different problem. I don't know why GM would even have 6X.75mm nipples on the premises, much less how any employee could install them without noticing something wrong. ::)
I've rebarreled several T/C and Lyman rifles but  I've never bought a "drop-in" barrel. I prefer to just get a barrel, breechplug, underlug, rib and sights and put it all together myself. In that way I can have calibers, twists and lengths not available as drop-ins and I don't have to pay for sights and ramrods I'll just throw away as useless junk, and bluing I'll just have to strip off before browning. And it's generally a bit cheaper, unless you find a drop-in at a good discount.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Semisane,
My 54 barrel was # 030805.

I have only heard of 54 barrels being affected.
