Apes
« on: December 10, 2008, 12:39:52 PM »
I'm built low to the ground for speed, grace and beauty, but I like apes!  I've got Heritage bars with 4 inch risers on my bike 'cause the shape of those bars are comfortable for riding and the risers put them at shoulder height, where I like 'em.   ;D  for me, with my bikes low, Mustang, seat, 15 inch apes are definately "hangers!"   :-[

Anybody else like apes?

I've always thought they looked uncomfortable for long rides but I've never tried them.

Thats what I thought then I put mini hangers on old Dyna Low Ryder loved them! When I got my 04 Electraglide my shoulders got a burning on long rides. Switched my buddy rides Soft Tail with apes burning went away. Only thing stopping me now from putting on Cyclesmiths 13" hangers on FLHTCI is those dam wires. I put a set of Chubbys on in 05 had to add wire to run in side of bars. 2 joints each wire forget but seemed like 200 wires with all the radio controls, cruise control and regular turn on off switchs. One more year retired and then I'll have the time. ;D Picture of old Dyna at Sturgis at the time had 10" higher bars and 16" longer hair.

I'd like to have a flat black set of mini-apes on my Nightster.  I hate changing the cables and lines.

I'll bet everybody has that dislike in common!

I rode a springer with apes and like it. I rode a soft tail and a sporty with drag bars and liked that even more. I like the "wide" bars on my Fatboy the most.

The Yamaha has the 19" but bars are only shoulder high. The most comfortable I have ridden it especially with the back rest in place. The iron head has the mini apes but they are almost as high as the bars on the Yamaha.

I always thought apes would be uncomforable, too, until I took a test ride on a friends Dyna awhile back. He had baby apes and they were real comfortable. Unfortunately, I couldn't come up with the money for it, so now I ride a Honda Magna with buckhorns and a mustang seat. Not too bad on long hauls.

This is my now ride 77 gw . It now has a solo seat , suicide shift, bobbed rear , and soon may get the ape hanger treatment. I got to decide how I want to build the bars . I am gonna use hi pressure stainless tubing mitered and welded . I want each side different height and the angle of the grip twisted somewhat. I built bikes in the early 80's , got to missing it after several years and one day this old boy decided the gw he had traded for was never gonna run . He gave it to me , title , keys and all. It now runs on a Weber 32/34 mounted on the stock intake manifold with the mix running through the stock carbs with guts removed.

;D
When I get the house piad for 1.5 years I am gonna look at maby an 1800 6 . Always wanted one of them gool late model bikes.

I'm riding a mostly stock '95 Wide Glide they have a semi apehanger bar on them? Feels like I'm in a recliner, when on the hi-way. IIRC their 10", don't want to be too high, for safety and handling.
