Definitely an obstruction in that barrel. I would call that a case of "Operator Error"

The blow up is reported to have occurred on the second shot.  That would mean shot #1 left something in the barrel.

Possibly a squib load, a bad cartridge, or possibly just a bad barrel.   Sako had a similar problem with stainless barrels a while back.

Even a Remington can be destroyed by a fool.  The world is full of them.

Well, I'm not a huge Remington fan, but it is a good testament to the bolt and gas vent system of Remington that the shooter was not injured in this horrendous explosion.

You don't have any evidence that the shooter did anything wrong, so your comment is rather foolish.

If you can't see that's from a barrel obstruction, you should take up knitting.

While it LOOKS like a typical blow up resulting from an obstruction, looks can be and often are deceiving.

If the rifle had blown up on the first shot I would be much more inclined to believe the cause was a barrel obstruction.  It reportedly blew up on the second shot, however, and there is no mention that the first shot was anything but normal.  Without more information one can only guess at the cause.

That's exactly the opposite of the conclusion everyone else drew.

As none of us were there and can only go by the photos and report "WE" will never really know what happened. However if that box of ammo was the one used it appears to be normal Remington Expres 270 ammo. The only thing we can be sure of is that something was wrong and that the action held.

Most people once thought the world was flat, too.

It may well be that the shooter did something idiotic, but with the facts presented that is only supposition.

Even if it's true, it doesn't change my opinion one bit.  An amateur shooter blew his gun up.  What else is new?

That's a good question. Does anyone have ALL of the facts here? And BTW, I am definitely NOT a 770 fan, in fact I am a sharp critic, but I believe it is not much of a story unless all the facts are known. Was there snow or mud in the muzzle, little stuff like that.

I am not a 770 fan either, but along with all the other lower end rifles they do serve an important market. I suspect Remington spend most of its development effort making sure they were safe and reliable.  I would be shocked if this was a manufacturing defect.  It sure looks like excessive pressure at the end of the barrel. That strongly suggests a plugged barrel. What is curious about this is the youtube comments indicate this happened on the second shot.

I sure would like to read a complete report.  I know the film raises a lot of questions that have to be answered before I am willing to hazard a guess as to what caused this malfunction.  I just thank God nobody was hurt.

My guess is that the barrel wasn't cleaned before the gun was fired & the jacket from the first round stayed in the barrel.

Swampman, are you suggesting the Remington ammunition was defective?  ;)

Just a joke.

Swampman, you make a great point. Whether the guy cleaned the rifle before taking it to the range is one of the key questions I want answered.
