well to be fair...winchester did this as well for a while. and if this one had been soldered it would have been safe, it just got skipped somehow. but how many got skipped? the barrels in the mossbergs are made by er shaw, so not cheap barrels anyway, and they usually shoot well.

i just thought you might wanna see this. i was going to buy one but i am not sure i want to now. do i really want to roll the dice...

I have a 270 ATR I have not shot yet, makes me scared to pull the trigger.  Wonder what Mossberg will say about this.

the info we have on this is that the bolt blew apart from a barrel obstruction. however, the 3-pice bolt did not help any.

assuming the silver solder gets installed, these SHOULD be safe.

i sure don't want to be the one who said it was ok and then someone gets hurt, so make your own answer.

This is bad.  I have a mossberg since the early 70's thats been a great gun.  I was hoping to get a new ATR to go with my old one soon.  Modern guns are starting to turn me off between there quality and high prices.

The quality has fallen off at remington and springfield armory too but what really hurts is the customer service sucks too.  You just don't know what to buy anymore.  The used rifles are looking much better all the time for sure now.

Seeing and hearing this crap just pushes me towards the military surplus stuff more.

Even our car industry has turned out crap for all these many years too and look were they are right now.

I just want the best product that available to me at a decent price.  But the bottomline is it has to last.
Example;

With guns it has to last forever(lifetime++)  I'm not fooled by the new bells and whistle calibers too. Just give me a simple plain jane rifle thats accurate.

If i buy a new car and finance it for 5 years it has to last for 10 years.  I need to get at least 5 years with no car payments.  So far all my new cars have worked out this way.  My '97 subie is going on 190,000 miles and still runs great.  Its 11 years old now and its time for a new one.  But i plan on keeping the 97 until 300,000 miles.

Pardon me but you believe what gunwriters say????? not that I find disturbing. They say what their paid to say and that's it.

my post is just to let people know what i found and that they may want to look into this further.

the writer is one i trust and have read for a long time and who is not afraid to speak the truth.

otherwise i would not just take him at his word. i would like to think we don't just accept ANYTHING someone paid to type, spews out.

the issue is, these rifles are coming up very frequently on the net as being dangerous both due to the bolt coming apart near the handle and being able to be fired before the lugs are where they should be, and also the bolt holding the bolt head and lugs on has a habit of breaking and shoving the bolt into a shooter's face causing damage.

the writer said he had called mossberg and they did not really have much to say. he is selling the rifle he bought after reviewing it, due to these things coming to light.

his trip was postponed, and he said in the new year when he finally gets to go on that hunt, he will ask the CEO.

Where is the whole story to this?  I don't see anything on the internet when I googled for the information.  I did see the one where the ATR supposely went off when the man was handing the rifle to someone else.
Where was the man's hand when the rifle exploded?  What would cause the rifle to explode--maybe the barrel was plugged up by something.  The other story on the websight involved a party hunting together and a person was seriously hurt.  I hope the person gets well and recovers but I would like to know the rest of the story of what had gone on.  Could have the person chamber a different round since he was in a hunting party, was the rifle in good working order -- I don't know and I want to know.  I am not saying that it didn't happen as told but I would like to see the news articles as reported.  I think there would have been more on the web than what the is since it concerns a major firearm company.  I hope all the information, both good and bad, comes out concerning Mossberg, especially since my brother has and shoots a Mossberg 4X4 in 25-06.

Has anyone heard anything new on this story??
Both sides of the story come out??
Any way to verify if it's true??

I tried looking around the web for more info, but I came up empty handed.

I was hoping to pick one of these up for a loaner/backup rifle, but this discovery has stopped me in my tracks. Don't want to see anyone get hurt, especially myself.

My son has an ATR.  It's very accurate and has killed a lot of deer.  The bolt is assembled just like a Winchester Model 70.

I once saw a Browing bolt action that was marked 30-06 with a 270 bbl the owner was returning it to the store . All he wanted was a new gun as the bullet was stuck in the bbl and the cas had split and "stuff" had come out the hole ! Now the store had to call Browning to see if they would take it back .
So any gun company can mess up !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I picked up a mossberg 4x4 and I never had any problems with it.  Majority of the accidents is from the person holding the rifle and not the gun its self.

the person holding the rifle cant do much about the lugs shearing off and the bolt coming apart, and those are 99% of the complaints. think before you speak.

Good decision.  I've said this before... there simply is no reason to own a Mossberg product.  Better guns can be had for the same budget price.  You've listed some of them.

Well, its almost a year from one of the accidents --- Has anybody heard of anything in regards to this matter?  Has it gone to trial, was it settled, has the trial been postpone?  Are the people involved O.K.?  I was just wondering.

Couldn't disagree more, owned several 500's, 835's, and a 9200(big POS that one) in various configurations hunting deer, turkeys, pheasants and small game, no experience with waterfowl, maybe that's your major hang-up with them. Never had jamming issues with them running slugs or shotshells thru them. The only problems with them was the plastic tang safety that would split in the screw hole, but I loved the safety located there. They have a price point that has introduced a lot of people to hunting, can't really make a silk purse out of that sow's ear, but something that was such a poor a product would not stick around for as long as they have. I think a lot of kids have been started on 20 guage 500's.

In pumpguns, I have also owned (3) 870's and a couple BPS's. 870's were ok, like the Wingmaster version a lot, just didn't use them so they hit the road. Finish on the BPS's was excellent, better than any of the others and shot well for me, however, I don't know whether I was short stroking them or what, but I could jam both of them with the ejection and loading from the same port. Like I said, not sure how, but it happened so I didn't keep them. I don't see any BPS's used or new in shops around here. They seem to sell a lot of Benelli autos probably an equal amount of Novas and 870's with Mossbergs making up the difference in pumpguns.

Having said all that, I don't own a Mossberg now as I don't hardly use a shotgun anymore and don't need to own Mossbergs anymore, have an older wood-stocked Beretta 390 that doesn't see the light of day very much as it is. I have looked at an 835 with the tactical stock for coyotes, but still like rifles more for that purpose.

This is just a follow up from what I know about the Mossberg bolt mishap and trial. The trial has been settled from what I gather(legal jargon is hard to understand).
MOSSBERG IS NOT LIABLE/RESPONSIBLE/AT FAULT or anything else to do with this accident. This accident happened because of a owner/handler fault. Apparently the owner took apart the bolt mechanism and didn't reassemble it correctly and was told by his friend that it wasn't assembled correctly, and he shot the rifle anyway. Nothing wrong with ammo either.
See www.24hour campfire.com and go to #3303974(or you could read all the questions and answers from those posting about "Injury from Mossberg 100 ATR"
 Also See www.boliven.com/legal_proceeding
Both talk about what's happened--either from the transcrips themself or through friends of someone associated with the trial and their answers. There also seems to be something that pertains with 2 other hunters about Mossberg, but I don't know what those pertain to. Yes, I own a Mossbert ATR100 and I'm NOT AFRAID to fire it. Others here may not like Mossberg or won't own a Mossberg, BUT that's your decision. It's still a fine gun, even though it doesn't cost as much as the guns you own. I also own Ruger and Weatherby, but I still like my Mossberg also.

Sorry Lonny, I hadn't thought of that. At least Mossberg didn't just settle to make this IDIOT go away, which would of left doubts in my mind that maybe there's some truth to this and the dangers of the bolt.

 Delbert,
I will agree that there maybe an issue with the bolt. But I have not heard of a perfect anything, except my wife(ask her)  ;) Honestly, I just get tired tired of reading post against the big companies, because they don't make the highest dollar, the biggest or the best new item. Truth is (i am guessing) Just like the man who owns the Mercedes or Cadillac's that would not dare own a cheap old Ford or Chevy. Why go low condone low dollar when you only buy the best?

To prove my point all companies have issues of some sort? Well here ya go. How about a tikka and sako recall because barrels are deffective and can rupture.
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,46095.0.html

Myself, I do not own a Mossy rifle. I do own 4 Mossy shotguns now. They think they are rifles though ;) But if we can scare some of these folks into selling their rifles CHEAP enough, I might buy a couple. ;)
