How many are still trapping
« on: December 12, 2008, 05:00:43 AM »
I'm just wondering with the nasty weather. How many people are still trapping something?
My trapping is pretty much dictated by days off work. I had other issues that intervened this fall to cut me short. But overall I guess I'm pretty much done trapping this season. I may go hang a few cables or set a trap on something that jumps right out at me. But nothing serious.
Today I'm putting up fur taken from the freezer last night. I need to stay after that now so it's all ready for the truck when it comes.

still out there trying in wate-r breaking al oto f ice, and haven't had a check yet with more than 50% of traps operable- but doing ok- 4 mink, 18 rats, 2 beav yesterday-

coon slow- nothing for a week- but a half doz last week-

broke everything free yesterday, down to 8 below last nighht so most of tose wil lbe froze- but 30s both weekend days, and we should get more rain tan snow- so coon should run- not set heavy but have out 25 or slow baited lured pockets plus some 220s

but then darn cold again next week-

as long as I get more each check than it costs me to run line, i'll keep picking away at things

might snare, might not- our laws are so insupportive of success on land, that except for coon, it seems like a futile effort. Certianly not a money making proposition

Yeppers, still chipping away like above.  Got  some spring fed streams where have some nice open sets, we dont have alot of coon becuase of parvo ect, took 17 so far usually   take 150 -230 coon.  Cables restraints out , waiting game and of course  bvr sets sprinkled around where bvr are.  Didnt get otter tag this year, DNR really cut back, but just like  the bear population they dont  and didnt know whats out there.   Lots of otter around... sooo will be  turning incidentals into DNR.   Hope  i dont catch anymore fisher as warden is wondering  whats up...  they get into coon sets.... at least the fur will be used for trapping education and  funding  trapping education.

Got a marten on the 11th.  Have a fisher set out.  Still have 30 weasel boxes to get out.  There's 4' feet of snow in some areas.  Wouldn't mind getting an otter too....that may have to wait until March though.

Your just way more hard core than me I'm a whoossie. I get so frustrated water trapping once the snow covers the ice. If I can see threw the ice it's like stealing candy. But everything here is snowed over now. Some streams are still running but the edge ice and slush gets you there.

Lee
Coon numbers are still low here too. Not as bad as last year, but still down. Not as many skunks either, so I'm guessing the same bug hits them?
Didn't get a chance to try to fill my 1 fisher tag this year. It's about a 60 mile drive one way to get in the zone. Just didn't fit in the plan this fall.

Dang Dooger
I wouldn't know what to do with 4ft of snow????  Is -4 here this morning and they are talk 4-5 inches of snow tomorrow. That is enough for me Brrr.

Newt
Just make sure you don't do any unnecessary swimming.

mac- you should have been with me yesterday- was coming out of a creek, and the landowner was feeding cows so we stood and talked for a while- when he left, I could hardly get into the truck, waders had frozen my legs stiff-

I had just enough workable water ot kepe going i ntimes like tses- but I have     many streams frozen over- got everything checked yesterday, so those will wait until at least the middle of the streams opens-

I'll tell you, my forearms are sore today from chopping ice!

had to keep turning coon and a beav yeserday as they frooze, so the hair didn't freeze down in truck bed-

don't like this weath,er but what can you do?

according to Farmers Almanac, suppose to be mild in Jan- can't wait...

seeing that we are running 25 degrees below our average temps,---January better be real balmy.
If my truck was younger, I would be heading south.

Just pulled the remaining rat sets yesterday...it was a bit on the brisk side. Turns out that I am going to have to set for rats again as I am 3 short of my goal.  Way too many misses yesterday.  I will start weasel trapping soon and maybe cable a little.

I trap all public land so I am waiting until Jan 1 to put out a mixed line.  I am prone to think canines work sets better in the late season anyway.

Fair weather trapper here this year with lots of work and business issues. My last catch trap day was December 4th and I don't plan on starting again unless January warms up a lot and that would be canines and quite experimental and small scale.
