TC Renegade .54
« on: December 12, 2008, 11:28:53 AM »
I have a TC Renegade in .54 that I purchased to use in the late muzzle loader season in PA.  It has to be a flint lock here to use it in the late season.  I took it to the range and after trying different loads could not get the point of impact high enough.  It shoots about 8"-10" low at 50 yards.  I use conical bullets with bore butter applied just before loading.  According to the manual the rate of twist is OK for a patched round ball or a conical.  I prefer not to use a patch if I can help it.

TC was kind enough to send out a replacement rear sight at no charge when I called and asked them about it.  Unfortunately it does not fit the sight mount on my barrel.  Outside of  filing down the front sight, which I am very reluctant to do, does anyone know of an after market set of sights that may give me the adjustment I need.  Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.  :)

Check out Track of the Wolf.  Get a replacement front sight file away until she shoots where she needs to.  If the bullets are grouping okay, then obviously you need a lower front or higher rear sight.

Another thought: what load are you using?  1 1/2 times the caliber should be plenty for hunting, which comes to around 80 grains of black powder for a .54 rifle.  If you are cranking 120 grains through, it may be that your velocity is so fast the bullet is out of the barrel before recoil can kick it up.

Yeah do yourself a  huge favor and go to www.trackofthewolf.com and buy some new sights, front and rear. Get a high front sight and you will be able to file it down to where you need it to impact. TC sights are some of the worse ive ever had on my muzzleloaders.  They either dont offer enough windage adjustment or shoot way to high.

All the above suggestions are good.  Why are you reluctant to use a patched ball?  A .54cal. ball makes a very large hole in whatever it hits!  It will surely put a deer down.  If you decide to try patched ball or others do yourself a favor and start with a fairly light load, and work it up until accuracy begins to suffer.  Better accuracy will kill more deer then sheer FPS.  You may also have to try few different powders to see what works best.  It takes time, but that is half the journey.

Thanks for the advice.  I usually load 90-100 grains of black powder in the flinter.  I haven't done a whole lot of shooting with this but I have a .50 that I load the same amount in and I shoot the solid lead slug that Hornady makes specifically for a 1 in 66 twist that barrel has.  Guess I cut my teeth with an in-line and as a result was under the impression that a patched ball would never be as accurate.  Judging from what I am reading here that may not be the case.  Thanks for  the assistance. ;)
