I picked the rifle (T/C ICON), now which caliber?
« on: December 12, 2008, 06:00:37 PM »
Hello everyone, Now where do I start? Well, I picked out a rifle that I've been admiring for the last couple of years, A T/C Icon. I really want one of these but I am having trouble deciding on which caliber.
My choices are as follows; .308, .300WM or 7mm Rem mag. Now I should tell you 1st that I currently own and hunt with these fine rifles: Win. 94/30-30, Win 88/.308, T/C Encore(.50ml & .308) amd two slug guns.
I live in the Alberta prairies up here in Canada and my opportunities at game include, whitetail deer, mule deer, moose, elk and antelope. I do have experience with the .308 and have never to this day had to take a shot over 170 yards. Now a long shot might one day present itself whether it be at a deer, moose or elk so what in your experience with these calibers and maybe even with this particular rifle would you choose?
I thank you all for your .02 cents and advise  :) ;)

I have one in 300 WM and it is great.  It shoots 3/4" groups at 100 yds with Remington Core Lokts.  The 300 WM will cover all of your needs.  However, the recoil is pretty stout, but tolerable.  Fit and Finish is that of a custom rifle.

I also have an Encore Prohunter with a 270 and 300 WM barrel.

Thats my biggest complaint...recoil  >:(  However I have fired a 300wm out of my brothers Encore and that was (to me) fierce recoil, probably due to the wt of the Encore. I have been looking towards the 300wm cal. too, but I've also been leaning on the .308...... ???
I do reload so I can always tailor my loads. And most likely I'll be doing a fair bit of shooting with this rifle.
I guess the biggest question would be; "Do I really need a magnum?"

My Prohunter with the 300 WM does not recoil bad at all.  The ICON has a little more muzzle flip than the Prohunter.  If you reload, you can cut your loads back until you need the full house loads.

You allready have 2 308's, so I would not want another UNLESS your Encore barrel does not group well. If it does then I would go with the 300WM hands down. You asked about experience with these rounds, I have shot the 308, 7RM & 300WM a bunch. For several years I was on a 7RM kick & I owned 3 7rm's at that time. I shot a bunch of game with them & the 7 works well, it will shoot a 160 for example at about the same speed & traj as the 180 in a 300WM, or a 140 will fly about the same as a 165 in a 300WM & so on, therefore the 2 are very close in trajectory. The difference between the 2 is energy/power. The 180 hits very hard, but you can load the 200 Accubond up to 2,900 or so with Retumbo or RL25 & it is in a diff. league than anything you can load in the 7RM. For rifles in this catagory I decided the 300 was better for me & over 20 years later I don't regret it at all. You mention Moose & Elk & for being able to shoot the animals at any reasonable angle with a heavy bullet & trajectory if you decide to shoot a little longer range later, (you probably will) gives you an additional advantage you don't currently enjoy.
The only advantage the 7 would have is less recoil than the 300, but a 1" Sims or Pac. pad would take care of that, the 300 is quite controllable IF you set up your rifle properly. Plus, in a pinch you would have the same cal. bullets.
Yea, the 300 for sure.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

Well I finally got to handle one at the gun shop yesterday, The Icon Classic that is. It too was in .300wm.
It felt really nice, really nice..and that's no stutter lol! I think I will go for the .300wm since everyone I've talked to whether on the internet or elswhere have suggested the .300.
Thank-You all for your comments & opinions and have a very Merry Christmas & a safe & Happy New Year!

Great choice!  I think I might have a smith swap out my recoil pad for a Sims or Limbsaver.

Thats a good choice, the 300 win mag. It can reach out and get that game you're shooting at.
