Good country music?
« on: December 13, 2008, 03:38:47 AM »
I've never been paid much attention to country music, but have recently discovered Johnny Cash and think he is a major talent with great music. I just got a Waylon Jennings best-of album and think it's fantastic. I want to find more music buy artists like that. I think they were classified as outlaw country. Can you recommend other good artists like that?

The list is endless.  I like Gene Watson, John Conlee, Conway Twitty, John Schneider, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, David Ball, Randy Travis, Aaron Tippin, and on and on.  And don't forget the wimmins.

Go to Pandora web site, create an account for free, type in an artist that best represents your interests, and it will create a station that typifies this genre. It works well for me.

I am glad you enjoy the Pandora site. I listen to it at work and at home. You will find the most popular artists as well as some very obscure ones. That is what I find interesting about it. You can also buy the music you like or listen for free.

Lordy boys---go back too the 50's if you want some tears in you beer and better country.
Now I like Willie, Waylon and the boys and the 70's had some good'uns.
I still prefer remembering listening too the stuff from Nashville, La. Hayride and Texas Swing in those days. Nothing better than honky Tonk Angel and It was't god Who Created Hony Tonk Angels.
Lefty, and those folks, one ol boy fro nova Scotia.
It is early but i may just go get a beer.

Johnny, Willy, Waylon and Kris are the four Highwaymen. If you like the music of one you'll like the music of the others and love the music the four did together. Iz dat simple enough fer ya?

Here in NH we are proud of our native son, the one and only Hank! Hank DeCato that is. He recorded a lot of vinyl but it is hard to find. Dick Curllis from Maine was also a great performer.

lend an ear to Tom T. Hall the his music is real good but pay attention to the words. The only reason he never made the big time in nashville is that he told the truth in his music.

These fellas were the original "Country Outlaws".  Todays "Country Music" is more like what we used to call "Top 40", "POP"  or "Soft Rock" back in the 70's.   Some of it is okay but it's not the "Country"  I grew up with.

Torpedo man you're right. After all, who doesn't "love little fuzzy ducks, old pickup trucks, tomatoes on the vine, and rain"?   And of course who can't relate to "old dogs, children, and watermelon wine"? Especially if one is "remebering the day that Clayton Delaney died." Guess I like  Tom T. too!

Do you consider BLUEGRASS in with Country Music ?

Bluegrass is not country though they are tied too the same umbilical cord.
Waylon was there at the Armadillo club, smoking grass. Willie was tired of fabricated Nashville music as it was trying too be pop, but he was not tired of the grass. Willie is from about 50 miles from Austin, up towards temple.
How the worm turned when he found the World HQ's of the Armadillo Club.
Some us were around during that purple haze.
Hank Snow is from Nova Scocia.
Lordy boys I am gonna go get another six pack.
Anybody remember hank thompson and the brazos Valley Boys.

I'm showing my age here; but the old country is more like country than the newer cross over stuff. I enjoy it more. Did I hear Patsy Cline in the mix ?

Ernest Tubb, Tex Ritter, OH MY LORD, the list goes on.
You boys are gonna drive me back too beer.
I like this conversation.
There has always been changes in music styles, country and pop,
Willie and others ran into the style of Chet Atkins and rebelled at it, others like Ernie Ford and Conway twitty, not too mention Eddie Arnold stayed with it and did well. Me thinks they got away from the roots of country but, that doesn't make them not-country, just a different genre.
Now, being from texas, we also had our own brand of Country---call it country western if you wish or western swing, if you wish. it was a very distinct brand and many were involved.
Ballardeers are also a different brand. Tom T. and hank Snow fall into this as do a number of others. BTW, one of the biggest rebels was also very close too being a ballardeer, Johnny Cash.
