30-30IMP, Bang/Flop!!!!
« on: December 14, 2008, 02:01:48 AM »
Yesterday was the last day of our first one week doe season, the only day I could hunt. I hunted with the G2 wearing the MGM 30-30IMP topped with a Burris 3X12 scope. The morning being cold 20deg., with about 4" of crunchy snow ruled out stalking as they could here you coming a mile away. I took up a position in the head of a hollow where if moving they normally crossed. But as my luck would have it they were crossing this morning about 100yds. away in the thick making shot placement almost impossible. So I moved my posisition into the ruff almost in the trail they were traveling. It only took about 30min. after setting up here come 5 doe right down the same trail. With the G2 scope set on 3 power the lead doe was a nice one for this area. With my back to a tree I rested the G2 30-30IMP in the custom made Underwood shooting sticks, with the cross hairs settled dead center the front does chest I waited until the front she was 30 to 40 feet from me to assure a clear shot thru the ruff. At the drop of the hammer the Nosler 125gr. B-Tip took her front and center, Bang/Flop, DOA, the way I like it done. As the Neug would say, OK backstrap, we will be eating good tonight, long live the beast!!!!

I have taken several deer over the years with my Contender super 14" in 30-30 and I, too, use the Nosler 125 BT. The "bang/flop" is the usual result.

Congrats to you! I KNOW you had fun cause I LOVE hunting with the TC's.

Congrats on the kill! The 30-30 improved is a great Contender round. I set one up years ago, but mine was as a carbine. I had read an old article by P.O.Ackley where he said he got 2700fps with  a 150g bullet, and I wanted to duplicate it. Most folks I discussed it with said it was impossible; that made me want to try harder. Never did make it, though I did get a round to take off at 2630, if my memory was right. Ackley may well have gotten 2700 out of a longer barrel. Unfortunately, it showed excessive pressure at that velocity and I had to back off to about 2560, which is still quite a bit faster than a regular 30-30.

I enjoyed playing with it, but sold to another guy who wanted to work with it. I prefer the 7-30 Waters in my 14" Contender; gonna try to get one with it this weekend.

Good hunting to all.

Certainly nothing wrong with the 7-30Waters. My first two hand gun deer kills were with the 7-30wWaters and it performed well. I then move on to an Encore in 6.5X55Sweed. Theres just something about the 30-30IMP that I just like it. Next season I have some others, 6.5JDJ, 257JDJ, 6.5X284 that I need to mixed it some with.
