My First Tikka(6.5x55)
« on: December 14, 2008, 07:02:30 AM »
It is on layaway at Scheels All Sports.
I need to sell one of my Swedish Mausers(Husky 38) first.

It is in Walnut and Wood.
They also let me exchange stocks from another(25/06) Tikka
that had some very eye appealing figure in it.
I have bought many guns at this place.

I am 60, but I kind of feel like when I got my first 22(67 Win.) when I was 10.

This forum was very helpful.

Regards,
Old 112

Sounds great.  Be sure to share some pics when you get it.

Old 112, I have a T-3 Tikka in a 6.5x55 and it is my favorite rifle.  I have discovered that Barnes TSX and Speer Hot Cores in a 120 grn. work wonders on Deer.  Barnes for Big Northern Bucks and Speer Hot Core for everything else.  They both shoot to about the same spot at 100yds with RL-19 and a middle of the road load.  I shot a 250 lb. Mule deer and it was 10 yd. bang flop. Shoot thru and did the trick at about 2750 ft/ sec.  No need to hot rod the load it has great penetration.  What a wonderful caliber, fun to hunt fun to shoot and very accurate.  The Tikka's bolt is slicker than snot on a door knob.  This is a very under appreciated caliber.  I use to perfer 30-06 and up thru the magnums, those days are over!  Wish I would have discovered this caliber years ago.    Buckfever

I bought one just ofter deer season this year.  It is identical to your gun  "od112" with a Nikon BCD 3x9 scope.  I cannot wait to use next season.
I have been out shooting a bit and have been very pleased with the low recoil impulse.  I am still experimenting with bullets.... haven't had my first three shot group under 1 inch yet. I am going to try loading my own to see what I can come up with for groups.

I've seen the syn/blue for $480. I think thats an affordable price for a great trigger and outstanding out of the box accuracy..! shop around and u might find it cheaper.

We have two gun shows in my area ,one in Fall and one in Spring. I don't recall seeing a Tikka anything but then I wasn't really looking. When I wrote about someone making a rifle in 6.5x55 available that a person could afford I did not have a specific make in mind. A Tikka syn/blue new would cost me over
CN$ 900.00 delivered to my door. :o

Old 112, have you picked up your tikka yet? I just bought a new tikka T3 lite in 6.5x55, put a 4.5x14 nikon on it and took it to the range. AWESOME rifle, I had a pretty good idea of what powders and bullets to try based on my custom heavy barreled 6.5x55 but I had no idea how easy it would be to find good loads for this rifle.

I tried 14 loads, 3 shot groups, to get an idea of what it liked, only 2 loads shot poorly, 12 loads went into 1.25" or less, 5 loads went less than .75", 3 loads were right at .5".

My rifle really liked the 125 partition, 120 ballistic tip and the 140 A-Max.

It also liked Norma MRP (RL22) work up to 50.5 gr with the 120's, 49.0 gr with the 125 (.42" 3 shot group ) and 47.0 with the 140.  Also seemed to like CCI BR2 with this powder

It also did well with Varget and the 120 Ballistic tip, work up to 40 grs.

I've been thinking of getting a lightweight lefty 6.5x55 for my daughter to hunt with. I'm thinking the 140's for elk and 100-120's for deer. Would like to get her only one rifle for both, but she's 12, and recoil is definitely a concern. I think a 270 is pushing the limits with her, so wondering about the 'swede.

How's the recoil on the lightweight 6.5x55 with the 140's and 120's? I may just download some 100's for deer.

She already has a deer rifle barrel for my contender, but it's too light for elk, and I'd like to get one rifle to do duty for both hunts and save some money.

I have a Tikka in .223 cal. use it for gophers. Great accuracy. I use IVI military cases,CCI mag. primers, 27 gr.Ball C2 with 50gr.  Hornady SX bullet. It will group well inside 1 inch at 100 meters.

Slim I would not be worried about the recoil is is quite modest about equal to the 243 youth model savage that my daughters use.

If it were me I would load it with 125 partitions for hunting deer and elk and then use 129 interlocks for practice

I purchased a Tikka T3 last year and it looks exactly like the doctordiasters above (walnut/blued with 3x9 Leupold in Talley ringmounts).  I tried 4 different factory loads so far... and 3 shot sub MOA !

Hornady Custom 140 and Win Super-X 140 were best @ .75".  Just tried to buy more Hornady factory stuff... forget it... everyplace  is out-of-stock/backordered.  >:(

Looks like I may have to get back into reloading. Anybody have powder recommendations to reload 130 - 140 gr bullets ?      I'm thinking H4831, RL-19, or RL-22.

Thanks... Rob
