winchester platinum tip
« on: December 14, 2008, 07:26:14 AM »
i was just wondering who uses these an what youre luck was with them.i used these in my 20 ga 870 with rifled barrel this year and killed a nice 6 point that dressed out a little over 140.shot him from about 35yrds and he dropped dead less than 20 yrds from were i shot him.entrance hole was caliber size exit whole was about 1.5 times calibersize.i was wondering if this is normal.im use to slugs that punch a whole that is like 4 more times the size going out.lightfield i used a few years back had a whole that i could almost put 4 fingers in.maybe he was to close so the bullet was traveling to fast to expand.but dead is dead i know.if this is how the platinum tips work than i think i will stick with them.not alot of meat damage like other slugs.thanks ;D ;D

The Platinum tips were great in my 500 S&W. Shot 3 deer with them, all 3 dropped in there tracks, and they were not spine shots. I tried the PT in my shotgun and I could get good consistant accuracy from box to box of ammunition. One box would shoot around a 1" group at 100yds. The next box would shoot 5" groups? I switched to the Federal 3" Barnes tipped expanders and have had good consistant groups again. But from what I saw with my 500 S&W this bullet is a great combination of expandtion on thin skinned game and penetration, if it shoots well in your gun this bullet is awesome.
