Any one have any real experience with one of these? I'm thinking of getting one and have HEARD a few good things about them.

I bought a PT-1911 SS a couple of weeks ago. On range trip, 100 rounds, white box Winchesters, no failures to feed, no misfires. I'm liking it pretty well so far......

I've had mine for over 2 years now, several hundred rounds through it. Had a couple of failures to eject fully when it was new--cleaned the crud from the extractor, and no problems since. My only complaints--the finish is not as durable as some (mine's the blued model)--there's a scratch beneath the takedown lever. And the black grips: very functional but butt-ugly in my opinion. I put some cocobolo wood grips on it and dressed it up nicely. I love the Heine sights--that's what really sold me on the Taurus. I find the two vertical dots quicker and easier to line up that the typical three horizontal dots. I think it's a lot of gun for the money, and I plan to keep mine.

I'll probably order one tonight. I am going with some sort of reddot sight, Would you consider mounting it on the slide or the grip?

There is a 75 dollar manufacturers rebate on any 1911 Taurus. If you read the rules it looks like to me you've got 10 days to send it in to qualify. I paid the extra 3 bucks and sent mine certified mail.

You'll need the UPC code off the box and the original receipt along with the warranty card.

I've had one for a couple of years. Shot a lot of reloads and a couple boxes of mixed factory HPs thru it. I have had no malfunctions of any kind. Everything works as it should, and pistol is as accurate as most stock 1911s. Don't like the "Straight Eight" sights, but a little bright orange paint on the front sight and a little sight black on the rear, and they are usable for me. Hate the billboard on the slide. I may just have an epoxy coating of some sort applied to the gun. The bluing is pretty thin anyway. I paid $480 OTD for mine. I'd buy another for that money in a heartbeat. They have a forged frame and slide, mine is well fitted, and has very few tooling marks internally. Heck of a buy for my money.

My grandson and I have had PT 1911's for a couple of years. Great guns. Factory or handloads, mild or hot, round nose jacketed or lead, lead semi-wadcutters, both have shot everything loaded in them and pretty accurate too. No malfunctions at all. Very nice guns, especially for the price.

I have had one for a while now and I really like mine. It shoots very accurately and works flawlessly. I had a few minor issues with it at new, but they were taken care of and it works better the more you shoot it.

I put another 100 rounds through the pistol this afternoon. Flawless operation with no failure to feed.

I don't have many rounds total, but that's 200 with out a failure. This last 100 were my handloads and 230 grain LRN from Missouri bullet company. The first 100 were white box winchesters, 185 grains. I've only run a few Federal Hydroshock HP's through the pistol and had no problems with them either.

About the only thing I'm not sure of is the eight ball sights. I might have to find something different but I'm not going to change a thing until I've got at least 1000 rounds through it.

I have a PT1911. I really like mine too. Don't have a lot of rounds through it but I have not had many issues with it. The only thing that I don't like is every once in a while a case gets bounced off my forehead when ejected.

Stiffen up that wrist a bit and the cases will go across your strong side shoulder. If you allow the muzzle to rise uncontrollably the cases hit you in the forehead.

My cousin had one for a year and recenlty traded it in for a SS Colt 1911. He has shot several hundred rounds throught it and only had a few jams ( corrected by cleaning it and he has had some bad ammo throught it. ) His 2 chief complaints where the finish, which after a year looked like he had owned it for 5 years, and the saftey kept trying to fall off, yes, fall off. Other than that he loved it carried all the time in the woods, killed hogs, coyotes, and other stuff with it.

-----------------and the saftey kept trying to fall off, yes, fall off,----------will ,guess I'm not the only one that had the ambidextrous saftey fall off,left side,had a blue 1911 for a year and a half and saw a stainless 1911 at the dealer so I traded up for it,12 round's later it fell off,took it to the dealer and he put it back on,back to the range and it went 18 maybe 20 round's and it's off again,sent it back to taurus,hope i get it back,they "LOST" the rear sight off my model 66 in 357 that i bought new in 1988,all i wanted was a screw that fell out and they said i had to send the whole sight back for the fix,they would not send me just the screw,might see my 1911 in a year or so after all the crap i read on here,I'm sick over it now, Poppie

Good luck! I hear customer service at Taurus stinks! I know the gun is under warranty, but I'd not send any 1911 back for anything short of a frame or slide failure. If the factory safety were to "fall off" I'd replace it with an aftermarket part. Inexpensive, and I'd have trouble trusting one that had previously failed. Given their lack of customer service, I surely wouldn't send it back for a missing screw! Hope it works out for you. Mine is still going strong.

I just bought one today first thing I did was install a CRIMSON LASER GRIP an bought 4 extra magazines, tomorrow I'm heading to the range to shoot it an site in the laser grip, my son has had one for about 2 years an he kept bugging me to get one, I know he has had no trouble with his at all. I was trying out some new handloads today. 375 rounds (100 @ 4.6 and 275 @ 4.9 gr 231) 230 lead rn, 4.6 or 4.9 gr 231, 1.257 OAL, .470 crimp. What can I say? I bought mine about a month ago. I've fired almost 1000 round through it. Not even 1 malfunction!!! The 4.6gr loads didn't differ in any way from the 4.9 loads, so I'll shoot the 4.6 loads. It performed right out of the box flawlessly.

It has a great trigger, excellent balance and feel, and is super accurate for an out of the box $550 out the door pistol. Plus, I have NO leading problems.

The sights are also dead on, though I wish they were adjustable. The Taurus proprietary sights are nice, but there are VERY few aftermarket choices.

I just got my PT1911 yesterday. I HAD to clean a thick coat of preservative off and out of it. I was looking at the sights and thinking about a reddot. That ambi safety will get in the way of a grip mount though. I was warned by some one on another sight that the dove tail is "strange" and he couldn't find a suitable replacement for a new sight. I THOUGHT about mounting a sight on the slide,BUT.. IF the dove tail isn't a regular size that's out also!

I talked to a customer service guy today abouit the dovetail being "strange. He said that It's a 60 degree cut. NOW I have to find a sight base for a red dot Halo sight that is cut at 60 degrees! Any one know of such a base??
I did note there were some scratches on the frame below the take down lever.

There are frame mounts available for the 1911s, if you must put a red dot on it. Doubt that a red dot would last very long if it were mounted to the slide! It would be absolutely impractical to mount any kind of optic to the slide, much less using only the rear sight dovetail.

The frame mounts for the 1911 are made for the REAL 1911 not the Taurus clone. The ambi safety blocks the pin hole on the right side. IF(big IF) you remove the right side lever WHAT holds the left side on?? If I dremel the part of the grip that is the problem WILL the mount stay solid with only the grip screws and a single pin/screw thru the bottom of the mag well?

Lots of Real 1911s, (OK, clones) have ambi safeties. Simple enough to replace the safety with a nonambi model. Just curious, what type of shooting do you have planed for this pistol?

The best mounts require permanent frame modification (drilled for mount). The Taurus frame works just fine with a Non Ambi safety.

Savage, we have a modified police pistol league at my club. It is a series of slow ,timed and rapid fire stages at 25 yards. Old eyes seem to work better with a red dot or other electronic sight. Usind a 1 1/2x pair of reading glasses the sights at arms length are quite clear, but the target isn't! I have a Burris red dot on a S&W 645 and a Ruger M2 . I can hit the black MUCH more often with these than with the 1911. The trigger on the 645 is horrendous at best, the 1911 has a much better trigger. I just can not use those Heinie sights!

Got ya! I use the low powered readers for iron sights myself. As long as the front sight is sharp I can good good hits at action pistol distances, which seldom exceed 20-25yds. I use a holo dot sight for NRA falling plates. When I miss a plate with that, I know it's my trigger control. I'm not a fan of the "Straight Eight" sights either. I blacken the rear dot & and paint the front bright orange. I have fiber optic sights on my SSP pistol. You might want to give one of those a try and see if it helps with the iron sights. Bottom line, the Heinie sights have been replaced with Bomar Adjustable Sights. They are 27 bucks delivered from Taurus, and fit the Heinie Taurus dovetail.

Skaarke!!!! I wish you had posted a few days ago. I just had a grip mount and burris red dot installed on the Taurus. I tried some Universal clays loads and an H&G #68 bullet. The 5.3 grain starting load was the best. Both 5.6 and 5.9 grain loads were MUCH larger! With recoil going up as powder increased.Since I have about 3 pounds of this on hand, I'm going with this . UNLESS I find a better load while practicing[;<).
The mount and sight cost more than 27 bucks!!
