VX-II POI Off after trip
« on: December 14, 2008, 09:44:42 AM »
??? 6 weeks ago I drove 1250 mi. to Virginia with my Leupold VX-II mounted on my 30-06 in a hard case
behind my pickup seat.  Before the trip the rifle was dead on.  After I got there I was hitting 6" low.  I know
we should always re zero after transporting a rifle, but has anyone experienced a quality scope being out this far after a trip !   ??? Jim

I flew to Idaho from NC a year ago and upon arriving in camp, the four hunters in my group all went straight to the shooting range.  The guide put up targets with a large diamond in the center, and four small diamonds at the corners of the paper.  I like shooting at a very small target so I picked out a small diamond.  After I shot, the guide went down range and came back to the bench suggesting I move sixteen clicks to the left and about that many up.  I did as he requested.  I was readying for my next shot when I proclaimed which of the smaller diamonds I was going to shoot.  The guide stopped me.  He assumed I had shot at the large center diamond (which was a challenge for one of his clients).  I then moved my scope back to where it was origionally and it shot perfectly - again.  It was a VX-II.

There was a guy from Dubai who had a Mod 100 Winchester with the worst scope I have ever looked through.  When looking through the scope everyone who tried to help could see two images side by side and they were blurred also.  The guide gave up on this guy.  Imagine flying from Arabia to Idaho with such a piece of crap.  The fellow was without a doubt, the wealthiest hunter in camp.

Don't be so quick to jump on the scope as the problem...

As we all know there are quite a few other gremlins that can pop up from time to time... ;D

That's why we need to check them, as a matter of course I do it about once a month or after a trip...

My son drives less than 500 miles and has to rezero when he gets here to deer hunt. Both scopes he brought this year are Leupolds. A vari X III 2.5x8 and a fixed 6x42 M8. Altitude, temp, and humidity can change a POI.
