rem mod 700 SPS varmint 22-250
« on: December 14, 2008, 10:53:33 AM »
I have been reading on this model for a bit now,,just picked one up 2 weeks ago,,the first problem I had,was scope mounting,,I almost need a shim,,but am going without,,,not much up-elevation left,,,the modification for improvement I read about are, barrel floating, glass bedding,& lightening trigger pull,,had my third trip to the range today,,,only shooting 100 meters,,,(everytime I head to the range,it's windy, lol,,& the 100 meter range is nestled quite nicely beside a big bush and tall berm, the windy day's are tranquil breezes 100 meter),anyway's I have been trying different ammo,,3 different factory loads today,,,and man !!!,,I'm impressed with this gun,,did 5 shot groups, the worst was .96 moa,,,and the best was 2 holes out of five shot's,,if it wasn't for that one straggler,,it would have been .72 with 4 shot's but the 5"th made it .737 moa,,so what I'm wondering is,,doing the modifications,,and possibly getting into reloading,,how much better can it get,,,one thing for sure this one is a keeper,,traded in a rem 770 and a H&R ultra,,both in 243,,,,best move I ever made

You really shouldn't need to do anything to it but lighten the trigger pull which is a simple less than five minute operation regardless of whether you have a new or old trigger system in it. We have a thread here that covers both. I have some photos I took of the new trigger in that thread started by Nonya. It's a sticky on the Bolt Action Rifle Forum I think if not then on the Remington Forum.

On mine I used an old box of Remington ammo I bought at least 15 years ago I'd guess to get it sighted in. I fired one at 25 made an adjustment fired one more than called it good to go for a 100 yard try. I got one ragged hole well under a half inch but don't recall specifically how large it was. Did nothing but the trigger to it. I then moved to Hornady factory ammo with 50 V-Max and while it's not quite as accurate as the Remington it stays under 0.5" at 100 OK.

I use Weaver bases and Burris Signature zee rings on mine. That way if as you say you need it you can use the offset inserts to get it close without having to use your scope's adjustment for the gross movement and then fine tune it with the scope. Mine needed only a minor adjustment of the scope to get it dialed in.

I had no problem hitting prairie dogs out to 400-450 yards with it even with the high winds. I was all around one out closer to 650-700 or so but never did get both the wind and range both doped out at the same time. I put several within inches of him but never did get him.

Mine wears a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24 scope. At the PD shoot I had the SF 6-24 on my .223 SPS Varmint but will be switching it to the .22-250 before the next shoot and the AO 6-24 will go on the .223.

Agree with Bill, leave the gun alone except for the trigger. Lighten that baby up and you'll enjoy shooting it much much more. With groups like that, just shoot and enjoy. Get a solid scope on there that you have 110% faith in and you'll be making everyone around you drool with the groups you're getting. Highly recommend *any* of the Bushnell Elite lines. Dependable, repeatable, rock solid performers at very affordable prices  ;D

Ya reckon?  :o

I picked mine up way too close to time to head out to OK for the PD shoot this year so really had absolutely minimal time to mess with it prior to the trip. There just wasn't time for any sort of break in at all. I did take time to lighten the trigger pull and mount the scope.

At the range I cleaned the barrel but didn't spend an inordinate amount of time on it. I then sighted it in at 25 yards as stated with the RP factory stuff left over from many years ago. I then moved to 100 yards with it and fired a group with that same RP ammo.

I then tried the Hornady factory ammo I had on hand for it and it worked beautifully as well. Both turned in groups under a half inch as I recall. I just cleaned the barrel up a bit and took it prairie dog shooting. While on the shoot I didn't clean it a single time just shot it. It and the Remington Model Seven Predator in .17 Fireball were the only two I bothered with on this hunt and I did it pretty much the same as the .22-250. Both were still popping prairie puddles waaaay off out yonder when the shoot was over.

I've owned a bunch of these heavy barrel Remington Varmint rifles and none so far have failed to do the same.

Mine shoots great. It's a Cabela's special with a dull stainless barrel and have mounted a 20X Super Sniper scope. For now use F-P 55gr. NBT ammo. I might lighten the trigger a pound and try reloads, but right now it's one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" situations...
