Unusual headstamps
« on: December 14, 2008, 01:28:59 PM »
I have one in my collection of 38 special brass. Amron 38 Sp. It occured to me one day that amron is Norma spelled backwards. Is Norma still making ammunition and componants? I think they used to make brass for Herters, I can't remember whether the brass was stamped Herters or was just marked Norma in Herters boxes.

In probably the late '60's, I had some .308 ammo marked "Amron", and some that had a grove cut all the way around the head, removing all headstamp markings.  Memory is fuzzy but I believe I also had some headstamped "Browning".  It was all 150 gr pointed soft points and, other than the headstamps, appeared identical and shot identically.

It also occurred to me that it may have been loaded by Norma.

Found another 38 case with a star  then a curved line, then another star. No lettering except 38 special.  Oh and I found one marked Mallory. Out of thousands of empties this is the only one I have marked Mallory.

The 38 brass is "Starline"     They make very good brass for a variety of calibers

I have a .44 mag case with a Midway headstamp. I contacted them and they said that they did sell some with their headstamp back a long time ago that was made for them by Starline.

Yes, Midway was under different ownership back in the late 80's and often carried their own brand name of brass. I have some Midway 357 brass that could have been bought for much cheaper than the top name brands. Midway used to circulate a monthly, multi-page publication with some fantastic bargains on the front and back covers. I would asume that the struggling company was just trying to get some cash flow. It must have been terribly mismanaged but the new owners pulled it through. No more mailers or fantastic deals though. :(

I was ordering from their bargain pages one night and got to talking to the person taking my order. I commented on her accent and she told me she was an Australian who had left that country for the USA when they started banning guns there. She said she was a competitive target shooter who couldn't live without her guns.

I always liked the way you could easily make small donations to the NRA through Midway. But the small change added up to big money according to their catalogs

I've got one piece of 30-06 brass and the only thing stamped on the head is 30-06.
I call this one a generic brand! :D

GOOD SHOOTING!

I think that takes the prize for most unusual so far. How much would have it cost to have some sort of logo stamped?

I miss those bi monthly catalogs Midway  used to send out. I always had one next to the "throne" in the "library"! ;D
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?
