T/C Encore 7mm-08 COL ?'s
« on: December 14, 2008, 01:43:51 PM »
Guys, I need your assistance.  I'm atttempting to work up a good load for my 24" Encore in 7mm-08.  I've measured to get the COL and I am not trusting my measurements though I've been able to repeat them.  I'm loading 140gr Nosler ballistic tips and my total cartridge length at the lands is 3.062.  If I back off the lands .015-.030 I've still got a LONG cartridge, much longer than the industry standard of 2.80.  Is possible that my measurements are in fact correct?  If they are it doesn't put just a whole lot of bullet in the case neck. ???  Thanks.

Andy

Andy the industry standard length is picked so that factory loads will be short enough to fit into any known action type & eject properly.  Yes, on most factory loads this puts the bullet more than 1 bullet diameter into the case neck. On a break action rifle, such as your TC, it doesn't matter how long your round is, but it is generally accepted that there should be 1 bullet diameter in the case neck. It is also suggested in some reloading circles that for hunting purposes the bullet be seated .050 off the lands. Following these general rules will often prevent us from seating as close to the lands as we hear some people say they do, but it doesn't matter because seating depth is a fine tuning reloading step & is somewhat of an advanced step. If you want to sneak up on the lands be sure to take enough time to master your measuring technique to be positive where the bullet is.

As you work up to the lands always back down on the powder charge & work back up because, in general, the closer we get to the lands the higher the pressure.

One of my most accurate loads is seated .168th off the lands!  Good Luck & BE SAFE! Jim  :)

From what I've read here and other forums, TC is known for having long throats in their chambers, and sometimes long chambers.  You might consider taking a cast of the chamber to see what its actual dimensions are.

As far as the COL goes, like HandiAndy said as long as you have enough bullet in the cartridge to hold it (generally 1 bullet diameter) then you are fine, and you shouldn't worry too much about getting that close to the lands.

Good luck and good shooting.

JustaShooter, your not the first to mention chamber casting.  What is used to make the cast and what are the procedures?  I would like to know just what my chamber looks like.  Thanks.

Forget the chamber casting and measuring.

Take your gun down to your reloading press.  Incrementally seat a bullet little bits at a time until the action closes easily.  The bullet will then be just off the lands.  As noted above, as long as a caliber worth of bullet is still inside the case neck, it doesn't matter how long the cartridge is.

My dummy round for my 7mm-08 encore pistol barrel measures 2.860".  I used grumulkin's method and the full length of the throat was about what you were measuring.  I just found that this lenght was the most accurate for the 140g v-max that I am shooting.
