'Thumper' Range Report

A complete disaster.......the 375H&H 'sorta patterned/tumbled' instead of grouping at 50 yards. Story begins last week when the new NEI.364 PP mould arrived. Got the pot hot and got busy.....I'm used to nice clean sharp casts, but try as I might these dead soft slugs still have minor surface imperfections and flow marks, I may have to modify my dipper technique! However, they did cast-up at a consistant 326-327grains; cast a 100 or so and threw 30 back into the pot......a bit heavier than I would have expected, even for the soft lead. With the patch applied and dried it barely made .375" I know because I measured them before they were fully dry, the false reading made the difference of .001-.002'', suspect  the diameter was just too small. The new patch material, a 25% cotton fiber content BECKETT writing grade, wet with water and egg white, was applied this afternoon and after drying with the hot air gun measure a true .377". I'll dip them in the beeswax/vasolene lube just before loading. The powder selection was and is still a concern. I chose 55grains of VARGET and I will also include IMR 4895 at the same grain amount in the next range session later this week. No pressure signs, velocity about 1850fps. Forest.

Casting pure or almost pure lead requires a higher temp than other alloys.  Try to increase your temp and add a little tin and seeif that fills out the mould better.
