new scope for deer hunting
« on: December 14, 2008, 04:46:20 PM »
Hi guys my father is looking to buy a new 3x9 scope for his deer rifle. He is going to put it on a Remington 7600 pump 270. I was thinking maybe a millett, bushnell legend, sightron S1, or a bushnell 3200 as he was wanting to stay under $200.00 What are your opions of theese scopes or is there any other scopes at $200.00 or less that would be a good choice.

A 2-7 would be a better choice for the rifle. Elite 3200 or Leupold would be my first choices.

I have had a M760 Remington in 270 Winchester since 1957.  It has had four different scopes on it.  I was happy with the Bushnell Banner 3x9 with BDC.  I bagged a number of bucks using that scope.  The current scope and most likely the last is a 3 x9 Burris FFII with the ballistic plex crosshairs.

The Burris is good in dark timber and open browse ways.  I normally carry my variable power scopes at the lowest power setting.

I have a 2.5x7 power scope that I have replaced on a .270 Winchester.  It has given me a lot of good service.  But I found I like the 3x9 or 2x10 power scopes when the range stretches beyond 200-yards.  My 2.5x7 power scope will replace a fixed 4x scope on a 30-30 Marlin.

A good scope that fits within your guidelines is the Classic Weaver in the 2x10 power or 3x9 power.  Last year I killed a fine 4x4 mule deer with a rifle that had the 2x10 Classic Weaver on it.  The temperature was in the teens and the scope never fogged.  The buck was running in mixed brush and timber and I had no problem picking him up in the scope.  The same scope can be purchased in the one fifty to one seventy price range.

The rifle is old and trusted, and it is mated with a new scope.

This year my hunting partner and I both took bucks on the same mountain.  He killed a buck at 266 yards. (Rangefinder measured)  He was using a 3x9 scope turned up to 9x.  I killed my buck at 32.5 yards, and I was using a 2x10 power scope set at 2X.

Nikon Buckmaster 3x9 and Leupold VX1 2x7. Both have plenty of eye relief. My choice would be the Buckmaster 3x9 or Buckmaster fixed 4x.
