150 yard shoulder shot
« on: December 15, 2008, 02:30:16 PM »
Well finally...  Used the Howa 1500 Stainless 24" Bbl in .300 Win Mag to bring this HOSS down!

I hunted a Buddy Stand on the lease Saturday, was suppose to go to Tennessee to duck hunt but was still feeling a head cold...

Between blowing my nose and seeing about 20 does and 5 spikes (anything less than a 8 point), I was looking for Mr. Big - either the 12 point I saw the prior year at season end or the 10 point I coul not get a 15 foot shot at during Bow Season.

The Bucks are starting to seek here is Tuscaloosa County, Alabama (I hunt in Northport, just north of T-Town)...

at 11:00 AM this Big Bodied 8 point popped out of the woods to my left, without a hesitation I aimed the Howa.300 Win Mag and hammered him!

Happy Hunting Y'all!

Congratulations, a nice hefty buck.

Nice looking rifle.  How is it recoil wise?

Thanks, the deer was a HOSS; had to ride back to camp and get a wide board to roll it up on the nack of the 4 Wheeler...

Much worse at the range when throwing multiple rounds at paper...  About as bad as my 444s Marlin that I use for Brush Hunting...

I love that gun!!!

Very nice looking deer and great looking rifle. So that is a Howa, same action as a Vanguard? Assuming it is, where did you get that stock? I have the same stock on 2 Savages and absolutley love it.
Where were you going duck hunting in TN?

Got the stock from a dealer online... If you are interested I can look it up and send you a PM... It has been glass bedded and a trigger job to 2.5lbs...

I was suppose to go to Obion, TN and Duck Hunt with a buddy on their lease...  Kinda glad I took a pass...

Thanks, any info on the stock would be much appreciated. Should your friends in Obion wish to welcome an Englishman from Murfreesboro, let them know I have shotgun, steelshot and duck stamp ready  ;D

Hey Old English,

Check "Stocky's" - http://www.stockysstocks.com/servlet/the-10/Boyds-laminated-rifle-gun/Detail - Poke around other sites by googling and send e-mails to see if they have any "Blems" (Blemished models with nics and scrapes) can be had at 1/2 price, then sand & refinish!!!

They are booked through the end of the season, my buddy told me he would contact me if an opening occurs...

Oh well, happy to have scored on the Buck; more meat on that critter!!!

Happy Hunting!

It would take alot of Ducks to equal that Buck in size & they would never equal in taste.  ;D

Nice Deer.
How does your 300 Group? It sure is a fine looking rifle. What load did you use?

Yup...  It was 200lbs plus based on the scales my processor used - took up 1/4 the space in my Trophy Room (Freezer :)) - I do not load my own, I use Federal Premium Barnes MRX in .300 Win Mag .180 Grainers...  Definately provides the KA-BOOM-PLOP I am looking for, we hunt a lease with some 2-300 yard clear cut shot opportunities...  I am sighted 3" high at 100 yards, I cut clover leafs at that distance... The gun has had a trigger job (2.5lbs) and Glass Bedded...

8 pointer, week eye guards / brow tines but it has 1 8 1/2" G2 and the other is 9"...  Not a bad rack on a big ol'HOSS... That is the hat inside the rack that I had on when I met this deer face to face...

Happy Hunting!
