FA 41 mag. bullet? (Hornady .411 300 FP)
« on: December 15, 2008, 04:18:25 PM »
Hornady makes a .411 300 FP for the 405 Winchester. Has anyone tried or know if that bullet would work in a Model 83 41 mag.? Thanks

I don't know. I've always used the Sierra 210 JHC in all my 41's with superb results. The 83 was conceived with a 1 in 14" twist to handle heavier than the standard 210-220 bullets. Personally, I'm a little doubtful of the ability to stabilize 300 gr. bullets, which will also almost certainly not expand at .41 Mag velocities. The only way to know is for someone to try to test a box, if they'll chamber.
Just out of curiosity, what would be the intended purpose of such a load?

Hello Ken,
I agree the 210 Sierra is a great bullet and I have also had excellent results with the Hornady XTP's. To answer your question I really didn't have an intended purpose but it was more a matter of curiosity. I have a Ruger #1 405 Winchester and a Mod. 83 41 mag. and just got to thinking about it. I know the Freedom Arms has the slower twist so I thought it might work. I guess I'll just give it a try and let you know what happens.
Thanks for the response.

Gary

Just to correct my post the Freedom arms has a faster twist.I shouldn't be giving thought to mathamatical orientated things in the morning.

No ,I see NO point in shooting that heavy a jacketed bullet in a 41 Mag.
If for some reason you want a more powerfull 41 caliber gun ,you should look on the reedercustomguns.com site.He can rechamber your FA 83 to 410 GNR (454 Casull necked down to 41).The 410 GNR is very powerfull and can drive a 305gr cast boolit to 1500+ fps.
IMO,the 41 mag does not have enough powder capacity (power) to get the 300gr FP to perform correctly.

I agree there is no particular point beyond my wondering IF it works and if so,how well. I'm familiar with Reeder's wildcats and they are impressive. My 41 works fine with the usual 210's and LBT cast bullets. If I want more power than that I  can use my 454,475 or 500. Just wanted to try something different and was curious if anyone had "been there, done that"

Yeah, I was gonna let the comment slide, though....
In any event , if you do test them, let us know the results, in the interest of learning something.

They will work but not in 41 mag cases due to the short FA cylinder. I used 41 Special length cases and H110, limited powder room, only got 1097 fps with them. Shot 1/2" groups at 25 yards, never tried any longer ranges, built the load for hog hunting, didn't get a shot that year. Expansion????? Velocity is pretty low, then again it is already 41 caliber  ;D

Side note.....I used the same bullet in my 411 JDJ Contender at 1900 fps on a hog this past summer, bullet didn't survive very well on the quartering shoulder shot at 20 yards  :(
