Ruger #3 45/70,,,,replace buttstock?
« on: August 18, 2003, 01:02:43 AM »
Long ago I read an article [oh boy!]that showed the famous writer's #3 with a #1 buttstock installed. The bolt lever might have been altered to fit,,I don't remember.
I just bought a #3 in 45/70 with the "Liberty" statement on the barrel. I couldn't resist the price,,and have always wanted "one of these". I like the #1,,but a #3 at a good price doesn't show up too often near me.
Has anyone put a #1 buttstock on there #3?
Thanks, Alan in GA.

I remember the gunwriter Jon Sundra had a #3 with a #1 buttstock on it. Slight alteration to the finger lever was needed. This was really one slick rifle (or carbine). As I remember it was chambered in 223.  Always wanted one just like it. Good luck. POW

Years ago, I remodeled my No. 3 (.375 Winchester) by removing the barrel band and reshaping the forarm, and replacing the carbine buttstock with a replacement No. 1 stock from Bishop Gunstocks.  I didn't have to bend the finger lever to make it work, but unfortunately Bishop is no longer in business.

I have two No 3's which I really love.  One is in .223 Rem and the other was a .22 hornet, which is now a .22 Khornet.  They both will shoot one inch groups at 100 yards.  I have dreamed about getting one in 45/70.  I am sure that the recoil is reallly something. I do have a Marlin 45/70.
