dura coat

well ol dad is getting into dura coating and we decided to do my H&R 22-250. painted it all in WWII OD green and it looks nice if anyone is looking into doing it. its easy and dont cost as much as you would think. i will get some pics of it when its all done.

I duracoated the barrel on my 12 ga. shorty 2 years ago and it still looks like new.
No scratches, marks or anything.
This stuff is very tough once cured and it's easy to apply.

Did the Duracoat thing with a bunch of guns about three years ago.  Cleaned them all up, airbrushed it on, then baked all parts.  Too much trouble. 

Rustolium Textured Paint works for me.  Stops rust, easy to touch up when needed.  Even redid some of the duracoat guns with textured paint since then.

duracoat, i believe, is bakeless.  guncoat, and the teflon from brownells is bake on.  dont know if im imagining, but i do believe there is a thing called durabake.  like duracot, but bakeon and for high temp parts.

we did the rustoleum but it chipped off bad. the duracoat needs to cure for i believe a week  but man we did h&r a savage bolt 17hmr and a 6x sightron scope for less than 50 dollars. not to bad if you ask me.

who are you ratting out? me? im not saying that you cant make them look good i just sayed that with the rust oleum mine chipped. i dont no if the dura coat will or not. was just curious if many people had any experience. i am just tickled pink with how ours came out.

I think you guys are all risking the rath of God for putting any kind of paint on a rifle, I don't care what the marketing guys tell you about how good or proper it is, it just isn't right.  Only proper finish for a gun is something that is part of the metal, like Bluing, Brown Rust bluing, or Parkerizing, there are a few others also.  If you want to paint any of the new gun finishes on a firearm they should be parkerized first to get something for the paint to hang on to, but then it is still painted and just isn't right at all.  Larry

I've parkerized every barrel I have made up, it is dead easy, probably easier than paint, it will never chip off and the total cost for doing the job if you build the little tank I did is about $60 including the solution.  You can then do about a dozen more for free.  Larry

I've got a Brazilian 20 ga. single shot (F.I.E.) that was a beater when I bought it for $35 18 or 20 years ago.  I've killed just about everything native to Northern Michigan with it, and it is still a beater.  I was thinking of covering up the dings, scratches, rust, crud, etc. with something flat black for coyote night work.  It's not worth a 60 or 80 buck refinish.  What would you guys do?  Thanks,

P.S. Another thought just hit me.  What happens to the serial numbers etc. when you duracoat a gun??

it, buy a new NEF shot gun one of the most expensive they make,
think of the economy.

I have painted three guns with Rustolium textured paint.  My NEF 30-06 and a Ruger Mini-14.  The 30-06 was lost in a river for two days.  after fishing it out it rusted by the time I got it home and was able to clean it.  Needed to stop the rust and did not have time for the Dura coat thing.  Textured paint worked, and is still working.  The Ruger was a gun that I had stolen back in 1996.  It got recovered last year and returned to me.  The stock had been abused severely so I was looking at replacing it anyway.  Needed a white gun for calling in the snow so the Mini-14 stock became white with the same Rustolium Textured paint, only white this time.  Liked it so well I then did the metal portions of my .223 Ultra in white.

I purchased a S&W model 19 that someone had nickel plated the frame and gold plated the cylinder.  They did such a horrible job and it was all flaking off.  Pawn shop picked it up and auctioned it on another web site.  I got it for less than $200 shipped and then used the KG Gun Kote.  I swear by this stuff.  Pac-Nor uses it on their barrels too.

Rex, I wouldn't throw that gun away, it loves me like my beagles.  Would you throw a beagle out?  Mud, rain, hail, sleet, snow, dust, dirt, blood and guts it's there and working.  It still works all the time, every time, but I don't dare take a peek down the bore.  I don't think it's ever had a patch down it.  The following shot cleans the crud left by the one before it.  Sort of like a 35 dollar self cleaning oven.  Once in a while I take pity on it and rub it down with some oil.

The little Topper/Pardner .410 I put together is almost pushing the old gal into retirement.  In fact it effected a marvelous cure on a weasel today that had a dedicated interest in my chickens.  He's in weasel heaven now.

Gun metal ought to be blue.  The stock should be wood with a nice finish.  Stainless is ok but barely.  Thats just the way it ought to be...........!

I've done quite a few paint jobs on both rifles and handguns. For metal finishes I like to use Brownells Gun-Kote. It's an oven cured finish that is unbelievably tough for both scratch resistance and resistance to bore cleaners. For plastic stocks and such Krylon's Fusion paint works great. Here's an example of each.

with duracoat the serial numbers and all the words and symbols show up. they make a compound called dura fill to fill in pitting and indentions if need be. i will get pics asap
