Not meeting my goal
« on: December 16, 2008, 04:47:30 AM »
Well, I've been doing hog population control for a nearby rancher for two years now.  The first year was mainly getting to know the place and learning the habits of the hogs.  This year I set a goal on how many we needed to kill to make at least a small dent in the population.  I'm not going to reach it.  Oh well, I came within two pigs, but it still eats at me a bit.  I'll get a better start next year.

This year still has two weeks in it. That should be plenty of time to kill two hogs if there is that much of an over population. Get hopping and get 'er done.

I know, but I leave town this Friday and I'm pretty well booked up until then....so, no more hogs in 2008.

With my luck I'd blow up several head of cattle instead!  Good idea though....

Jmayton If I assume correctly that you live in the great state of Texas then you should just give up on making a "dent" in the population short of ordering around the clock B-52 strikes. How can you expect to kill that many? Not even trapping can alleviate the problem of hogs in Tx. But I admire your conviction and determination in your quest.  Kix

Not to worry..............if it is close enough just give me directions and I'll be more than happy to take care of that problem for you...... in your name of course.   :)

Well, it's almost 2009.  Got back home earlier today.  I'll actually start my 2009 hog season tomorrow with a buddy.  We killed 23 off this ranch in 2007 and 48 this year....mostly sows.  I may not be able to make much of a dent, but when i started hunting this ranch, the hogs were running in herds of 30-50.  Now it's unusual to see two mature sows together with their litters.  If anything, I've changed their habits and they're doing less damage so the landowner is happy and i get to kill pigs.  We'll see how 2009 goes.  I think I'll try for 75.

I often wonder how the Florida deer hunting would be without the hogs.  The hog ratio is 20 to 1.  But then I measure some of my pleasure in hunting (and eating) in the fact that with hogs it means hunting 24/7/365 and deer hunting is only 90 days in the Winter.

As they say, we can sleep when we die.   For now, we'll be out hunting hogs night and day and night.  Don't call me at home.  I won't be there.  Kill them all.  There is no "End of Line" with hogs.

A friend caught seven in a trap the day after Christmas, he put them in a stock trailer so he could haul them to a buyer.  Whe he checked the trap the next morning he had sixteen...........one of the old sows had dropped a litter overnight.  He cut her and the pigglets out and penned them up on his place, they will eat well in a few weeks.

We were overrun with hogs earl in the deer season, but after taking ten or so off the place I haven't seen one in over three weeks.......we couldn't be so lucky that they are all gone, but it would be nice if they were.

jamaayton, you are doing right by killing the sows, that stop, or slows the reproduction process, and causes the boars to move on.
