best powders for .358 Win Cast?
« on: December 16, 2008, 02:16:43 PM »
I have ~205 gr gaschecks to start with my M77 and may move to heavier bullet.  I plan to start with H322, maybe H4895. If anyone has really found a favorite powder for .358 Win cast at close to 2000fps I'll be tempted to try it.  May consider .308 cast experience here too or .35 Rem or Whalen. Thanks a lot.

The only two loads I see in the Lyman book for a 200 something grain bullet that come close to 2000fps are XMP 5744 and RX7.
In the 250+ or -- weight the velocity range is 13 to 1400 fps with shotgun or pistol powder. I saw no loads that used rifle powders in that cartridge.

The 35 Whelen shows more possibilities with the 200 gr bullets with one load giving +2800fps( WOW !!)

I shoot the 205 RCBS 35 caliber mold in my 357 Maximum, 357 Herrett, 35 Remington and 350 Remington Magnum.  With that being said, I prefer H4895 as the powder of choice for my 35 Remington and 350 Remington Magnum when shooting bullets at 2000 fps.  XMP 5744 and SR 4759 are also excellent choices for your 358 Winchester.

If you would like published data for your cartridge I would be happy to provide it.  H4895 is a solid winner.

In the .35 Rem I just use jacketed bullet infomation with the RCBS 200 grain FN. I have gotten great groups with AA-XMP2015, and IMR 4895. The nice thing about the 2015 load is that it shoots to the same point of impact as the 200 grain jacketed loads do, and is a maximum published load with no leading using air cooled ww.

I do the same as Tallwalker, use the same data as similar weight jacketed bullet.

In my .356 WIN with a 220 gr water quenched gc cast bullet I have used:
Accurate 2520
H 335
H 4198
H 322
BL-C(2) and
Varget

So far, best results for me have come with the A2520 and Varget.
Velocity in the 2200 '/sec range.

I am going to have to try some of that 4895 one of these days.

And I'm going to have to try some 2520. Had spectacular results with their 2015 in factory 6PPC,though you had to fiddle with it. 4895 is easier. I think it was the original military powder for .308, believe less temperature sensitive than others
