Encore barrel
« on: December 16, 2008, 03:10:20 PM »
I have an encore frame and was hoping to get a 30-30 super 14 barrel for it but I do not see one listed as a TC option.  I checked Bull Berry also and find none there either.  Am I missing something?  Thanks, Gulfdaddy

Not a common Encore chambering, try here also. http://www.eabco.com/barels01.html

Super 14 is a Contender designation.  The normal pistol length for a rifle cartridge is 15 inch in my experience.  You might check for that, but I don't know if factory Encore's ever came in 30-30.  Check Ed's TCs or the TC Custom Shop.

I never noticed that before now, but the 30-30 is NOT an Encore pistol standard offering.  You'll need to have one custom built.  You might consider having it chambered in the 30-30 Ackley Improved, especially if you are a handloader.  If not, the old 30-30 is a fantastic pistol cartridge!  Perhaps consider a 12" bull barrel rather than a standard 15" length.

Just a suggestion or two, for what it's worth.

I get my Encore and G2 barrels from MGM.

Shilen blanks, reasonable prices and quick service.

Their website isn't the best, but they have great service.

In the 12" length is the report awful and would a break be a reasonable attachment for the caliber?

I have a 12 inch 30-30 Contender barrel and don't think the report is that bad.  And neither is the recoil.  I see no need for a brake, and I am recoil sensitive.  My only braked Contender is a 14 inch 7-30 Waters, and only because it came that way.  I don't think it needs one either.

I (also) have a 14" 7-30 Waters Contender barrel without a brake. I would agree that you do not need a brake for that caliber. The 7-30 is a relatively mild recoiling caliber. When I compare it to shooting my 6.5" Smith 44 magnum, the 7-30 is a pussycat.

I don't know if Gulfdaddy has compared the ballistics between the 30-30 and the 7-30. (I know I have in the past, but right now those "memory banks" seem to be flooded with past amounts of a liquid substance of a known origin....that I just don't want to disclose right now  ;) ). I don't think the 30-30 gives all that much more "umph" for the bang. Especially if your shooting whitetail.

I will say that my 7-30 is an exceptionally accurate cartridge.

Thanks guys, I may just go with the 7-30 waters.  Sooo much good said about it.  I was leaning toward the 30-30 in a IA barrel because the ammo was every where and some day I may reload for the IA.  Heck why not both over the next few months?  It's not like I am buying the whole weapon, just the barrel.  I like the mild recoil and low report and 99% of my game is taken with in 100 yards anyway.  Texas hillcountry whitetail and coyotes.  No need for a real boomer for them.
Yep that sour mash makes you forget and makes memories both.

What barrel length and weitht in the 7-30 waters?

I have the 14" T\C factory barrel with a Leupold EER variable scope mounted on it. IMHO the Leupold EER is overkill. I have a Simmons ProHunter 2-6x on one of my Smith 44 magnums that are excellent handgun scopes, and they cost around $110.

My 7-30 likes the Nosler 120 or 140 grain bullets.

I don't (personally) like muzzle brakes, they are too noisy for me!  The 7x30 Waters is a fan-freakin'-tastic cartridge.  Can't go wrong there!  I don't have one (yet) but it's based on a fine shooting cartridge in the Contender - the 30-30.
