Varmit barrel
« on: August 18, 2003, 04:25:12 AM »
I'm planning on getting a varmit barrel for my  Encore.  I've been looking at 223. 223 imp, 22-250 and 220 Swift.  Any recommendations on which I should get.

I have a factory heavy 26" in 22-250 that shoots 3/8" 100meter groups pretty regularly.  KN

Heck, just get all of them and end the pain of choseing. :)

But if I had to only pick one, it would be the 22-250.

I'd say 223 for alot of squirrel shooting and 22-250 for open land coyote shooting.good luck.

Onesonek knows his stuff! My 6MM AI from Bullberry is the most accurate of all my Encore/Contender barrels!

If you are a hand loader I would go with the 22-250, if you will use factory ammo the majority of the time go with the 223.  Or go with both - I shoot the 223 in my Contender and the 22-250 in my Encore - both pistol lenght. :)

I have a 26" .223 bull barrel and i have been able to get 3/4" groups out of it at 200 yards with a calm wind.  The longest shot i have killed a coyote on was 400 yards believe it or not.  Most of my shots are at about 100-200 yards and i am completely confident in the weapon.

what load are you using? The best I can do is about 1 1/2 inches with Win. 40 round varmint packs 45 gr. hp. I have the same barrel (26" bull)  and am not satisfied with group size. I shoot one holers with my .308 mod. 700VLS and my mod. 700 custom 25/06 (shilen bar.) so I am reasonably sure the problem is not my shooting ability. Sure would like to get this thing sorted out. Thanks

I got a 22-250 15" barrel with my encore that I purchased a while back, but haven't had time to shoot it much.  How's the accuracy, and what factory or handloads have you found to work the best?

Thanks, Bill

I have a stainless .223 heavy barrel and I have shot several 5 shot groups at 100 yards at 3/8 of a inch , I usually shoot more like 5/8 inch groups however .
I think you will actually like any of cartridges you listed .  good luck

I you shoot factory then go with the 223, but if you roll your own then get a 22-243 middlestead.  Talk about SMOKING!
