Season taking its toll, need a remedy
« on: December 17, 2008, 09:37:54 AM »
My season has been going great thus far.  However, it is taking its toll on my body; in particular, my wrists/hands.  They have been sore for most the season, normal aches and pains.  But now that I am chopping ice the pain has been ramped up.  My wrist now ache all the time, I have lost grip strength and my fingers are going numb.

Any suggestions to help remedy this?  Other than quit trapping.

Oh yeah, I am not an old man or out of shape.  29 years old and reasonably svelt.

Thanks,

Teal

L ;DL,  Sheesh, just think when you get  over 60    ::)........ stretch the muscles  before going to bed and WHEN you get up ... sometimes a little ibroprofen will help..... best is get out there and chip and chop some more and  look for very thin spots where springs or bvr are swimming from bank hole or lodge..... Have fun.... ache-ache- ouchy -ouch!

try some Thera-Gesic cream on those sore aches and pains- its the best by far of the heated rubs- fairly cheap and available most places-

also try to stay wram out on the line- I find that if I get cold while exerting muscles, I fele it much more the next day-

seems like every year, its smething else- some years its my feet, some years my back, etc-

this years its my thumbs- both ache constantly- from setitng traps and skinning I assume

I usually get past the pain and cramps after about the 4 or 5th day. Third day is usually the most painful one for me then it usually starts backing off. When I get aches and pains I think need drugs, Aleve works best for me, Ibuprofen rips my guts up. If it is constant joint pain you might try Glucosumine. Thing is it can be pricey and it takes at least a couple weeks for you to feel any improvement. It's like a vitamin that helps rebuild and lube joints. At least that is what the doc told me.
Unless you've really hurt yourself and need a rest. I've always found the best thing is to just keep moving.
Good Luck

Well my wrists and hands are feeling better.  I wore braces at night which helped a lot.  The best thing I did though was wrap my ice chisel in foam pipe insulation and friction tape.  This worked awsome for absorbing some shock, also didn't have to grip so hard.  In addition, due to the cold snap, I pulled my underice rat line; this has helped the wrists a little too.
Thanks fellas.

If it keeps up and you do have to seek treatment for carpel tunnel there is a treatment called "cold Laser" that takes no recover time at all. not like surgery. try looking into it before you let someone cut on you.
