I have a Bisley Blackhawk hunter for when I want to hunt with a handgun

thinking of selling my 686 6" 357 and getting a 4-5" S&W 44 for when I just want to carry a potent handgun while out rifle hunting as a backup primarily and maybe to shoot something that just gets too danged close to use a rifle for!


any recommendations on a specific model?
mountain gun?

loads I would like to be able to use are 17.5 of 2400 under a 265g BTB WFN
not bad out of the Bisley blackhawk at all

Recoil in the Mtn Gun gets a bit snappy with the right loads.  Don't ever recall having anything too dang close to shoot with a rifle though, close enough to get messy.

You might want to try a 4" Redhawk. Its like a Mountain Gun on steroids. Mine is very accurate with Cast Performance 320 gr loads out to 75 yards (have not shot it farther). Its small enough that I really don't notice it on my belt all day either.

I have and have owned quite a few 4 inch 29s and cant say that i can tell the diffence in recoil between a mountain gun barrel or a std barrel and for all practical purposes i couldnt blindfolded tell you which was on my hip. If looks doesnt matter to you then id let price dictate which you buy. What ever you can find a deal on. Personaly if givin my druthers id love a 4 inch blued std barrel gun with a hammer mounted firing pin.

well, like the other day, hunting out of a blind over a field with my 270
200 yard shots are average and can be out to 300
but, had a doe come out at 30 yards from underneath the blind...

I'm with Lloyd on this one (and most others as well!!)  I have a Mtn Gun and a 6" 29.  IF and I may still, buy another, it will probably be a 6" 629 and have the barrel shortened to 5"...but really....it's the SW500 grip that really makes the difference for me on these.  One is as good as another.

Sounds like you already own a .44 Bisley blackhawk so, why wouldn't you want to carry a pistol your already familiar with and shoots the load you listed? Just a Christmas present to yourself?

On of my buddies likes his 629 5 inch Classic. S&W is also selling the blued 29 4 inch again.

My personal preference would be the S & W 44 mag Mountain Gun.

I have a blued Mountain Gun that I purchased last summer. It looks fantastic, shoots great and the recoil is negligible.

I also have a S & W 460 PC 7 1/2", 629 8 3/8", 629 Classic 6 1/2", 629 Hunter Plus 7 1/2" and a 60 Pro 357 3".

The worst recoil, by far, of the bunch is the 60 Pro. It almost hurts after a couple of cylinder's of full house 357's. However, it is a pleasure to shoot with 38 +P's.

All of my Smiths have excellent triggers and shoot great. I cannot say that for some of the other brands I have or had.

My 629 with the 4 in. barrel and rubber grips has far less felt recoil than my Super Black Hawk 7 1/2 in. barrel and factoey wood grips. BUT if you don`t mind recoil and want something lite to carry try the PD 329. Not much fun with wooden grips, but real fun to shoot with rubber grips, and weight is close to a mod. 19 .38 sp.

Doug, Everything happened so fast when we saw the hogs, this year, I didn't even get a chance to draw the .44 Mountain Gun from the chest holster. Wearing a heavy coat didn't help this situation, either.  So, I'll try next time to get one with my Mountain Gun again.

Since you are already used to the Bisley Hunter, why not go with a 4.6" Blackhawk with Bisley configuration.
Same system, stronger gun than the S&W.  The shorter length makes it easier to carry. JMHO.
