Procrastination…
« on: December 17, 2008, 03:32:29 PM »
Well folks being the procrastinator I am I never thought that it could or would kill me until now. I have been putting off replacing the heater core in my Isuzu for a few weeks now not thinking it was a big deal but as it would seem it is quite a big deal.

This past Sunday I started getting a sore throat and figured it was a bug that was going around and figured I would be better in a day or two. Well come Tuesday I seemed to be getting worse not better and told Heather that she may need to carry me to the emergency room and let them see if they could figure out what it was that I had. Now mind you that in my 36 years of life I have only been to the hospital twice for myself and both times were to get sewed up as I really dislike doctors and hospitals. Well so around lunch time Tuesday Heather tried to wake me and said that I was incoherent and mumbling which is not normal for me so she made me go to the hospital. We got there and no one was waiting so they sent me straight back and took my vitals… BP was 87 / 86 and heart rate was low as well but they did not seem too concerned and told me it was nothing to worry about.

They stuck a long Q-tip down my throat to check for strep and left me on the bed for about 30 min or so as I was in and out so don’t really know how long I was in there. The Doctor came in and told me it was not viral or bacterial and that he was going to give me antibiotics and steroids which should take care of what ever it was. So after another 20 minutes or so the nurse came in a gave me a shot which I really did not like as I hate needles with a passion but anyway she also gave me 2 800mg motren for the inflammation and they sent me home. Well today I was feeling a little better and for sure seemed to not be getting any worse so I decided to go to work. After being in the truck for about 10 minutes my throat started swelling again as if someone was choking me. After talking to people in the anti-freeze recycling business it seems that it is common for people exposed to heated ethylene glycol through inhalation to show the same symptoms that I have. I have started drinking milk to help stop the acidosis that has been forming as a byproduct of the glycol being metabolized in my body and it seems to be helping a lot.

MORAL OF THIS STORY…. Do not procrastinate when it comes to inhaling chemicals… never a good thing…

One method of treating Anti freeze poisoning is to keep the patient drunk until all the Etheline glycol has left the body, a strange but true cure.

Matt, glad you figured out what was causing the problem, but what caused you to talk with the antifreeze people?  Have you gotten back to your doctor about what you discovered?  The info could save someone else.

Anti freeze will kill ya! Glad you figured this one out. It's amazing what simpletons doctors can be. When they make a mistake they just bury it.

Well I was driving the truck and noticed that my throat seemed to close the longer I was in the truck so I asked my uncle who was in the Antifreeze recycling biz several years back. After reading the MSDS on Ethylene Glycol I was sure that it was the root of the problem. I did not contact the doctor as I figure he could give a rats butt less as I am sure it is not a common problem as most people fix or replace things as soon as they break as they should...

In the doctors defense I did not say anything about the heater core as I did not make a connection until the next day.

He still hasn't fixed the thing yet. But then that's only one of a thousand things he's still procrasinating on.

If you don't need the heat you can bypass the heater core by hooking the 2 heater hoses to a peice of tubing.

That is the plan as I have several 12v heaters that I think I am going to put in it for the time being...

Matt; I don't think the Santa trick is going to work. GB and Heather are not going to give up on you. I suggest you tell them you will try to do better next year.  Have a nice Christmas and a happy new year. Carl L.
