NEED SAFETY GLASSES
« on: December 18, 2008, 02:24:27 PM »
Sorry for the off forum topic, but I bet you folks can point me in a good direction:

My wife is beginning to shoot her new gun (custom made for her Caspian 1911).

She has learned that center fire pistols tend to spit and fart a lot.

We need a pair of goggles or glasses that will fit over her prescription glasses.

What do you guys or gals recommend.

Thanks for any help.

I am scared to touch this one...Usually to (spray) someone to the side of you at the range is a no no & would suggest a timing problem but to have fragments hit the shooter?
Need more knowlegable advice here as I have never had that happen. I did have a dble barrel dbl trigger 12ga Stevens at one time that would do this but thats another story.

glanceblamm,

Let me assure you there are no bullet fragments going anywhere but down range.  Infact my "better half" is shooting master scores with this gun at the ppc league.  This is a semi auto 1911.

The load is a gallery load, or a low power load using a fast burning powder.  As such it is subject to fouling the gun and action faster than, lets say full power factory ammo.  Consequently, burnt powder residue can get on your hands and also gets on her prescription glasses.  This can be unnerving as a shooter, and puts your mind on getting crap into your eyes rather than lead on the x ring.

Thanks for your concern,

Fred

Just go to a local Ace hardware store and buy the kind of googles used by construction workers? By all means, protect yours and her eye sight! Neatness doesn't count here so use what ever will solve your and her problem?
When I find myself in this position, I usually use just my prescription glasses?

No slights intended Sir, mine was just a matter of misinterpretation.
The problems that I can think of with the goggles would be the undue steaming of the lens. Might be able to "broaden out" those side vents though. Good luck & happy shooting to ya!

I get mine from this place. They have all colors, all sizes and they are inexpensive.

it is important to wear safety glasses even if you wear regular glasses, I have had splash back from steel plates hit me and you just never know when something else can go wrong and hit your face/eyes.

+1 on the hardware store goggles.  You only get one pair of eyes...

I have had to wear glasses for about 60 years, these clip on lenses are fine for most shooting.
I had to keep reading this thread,as MY first impression was the same as glanceblam's .

FITOVERS are a pair of glasses (usually tinted) that are made to fit over prescription glasses. I have several pairs in different tints. I recently found a pair that are clear! Fitovers is the brand and they are available at some gun shops but mostly at pharmacies and Eye doctors often have a display of them in their office. The prices are reasnable and they hold up well. I use my amber and my clear lens models the most. They have sideguards and that is important when shooting in a line, such as at a gun club event or practicing with a friend. Here is one of many online sites for them. Happy shooting. Ken

You might check Labsafety.com for glasses. Polycarbonate, not very expensive.

I use the NYX with the prescription inserts.  I have about 6 different colors of lenses.  I really like them.

I have also used Fitovers for about 7 years. They are outstanding.
